NIE Number

NIE Number in Spain: How to Get It, Requirements, Cost and Forms

The NIE number in Spain — Número de Identidad de Extranjero — is the personal identification number assigned to foreigners who have economic, professional, social or other official dealings with Spain.

You may need an NIE to buy property, work, pay taxes, establish a business, complete a notarial transaction, deal with Spanish authorities or carry out many other administrative procedures.

But one distinction is essential:

An NIE is an identification number. It is not a visa, residence permit or work permit.

You can have an NIE without being a Spanish resident, and many people who become Spanish residents receive their NIE automatically during their immigration procedure rather than applying for it separately.

Can you work in Spain simply because you have an NIE?No

What Is an NIE Number?

NIE stands for:

Número de Identidad de Extranjero

It is the identification number used by Spanish authorities for foreign nationals who have dealings with Spain.

The number is personal and unique.

Once an NIE has been assigned to you, it remains associated with you. You do not obtain a new NIE simply because you:

  • move to another Spanish city;
  • change employer;
  • change immigration status;
  • renew a residence authorization;
  • replace your TIE;
  • leave Spain and return later.

This makes the NIE one of the most important identifiers in Spanish administrative life.

What Does an NIE Number Look Like?

An NIE normally contains:

one initial letter + seven digits + one control letter

For example:

X1234567A

The number may appear on different documents depending on your circumstances, including immigration decisions, residence documentation, EU registration certificates and TIE cards.

Is an NIE the Same as Spanish Residency?

No.

This is probably the most important fact to understand about the Spanish NIE system.

An NIE identifies you.

It does not, by itself, give you permission to live in Spain.

For example, a Canadian living in Toronto could obtain an NIE because they are purchasing an apartment in Spain.

That person would have:

NIE → Yes

but could still have:

Spanish residence authorization → No

If they later decide to move permanently to Spain, they would still need to qualify under the appropriate Spanish immigration route.

If you are planning to relocate rather than simply complete a transaction, see Immigration Services in Spain.

NIE vs TIE: What Is the Difference?

NIE and TIE are frequently confused because the NIE appears on a TIE.

They are not the same thing.

NIE

The NIE is your identification number.

It identifies you in Spanish administrative systems.

TIE

The TIE — Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero — is a physical foreigner identity card issued to people in qualifying immigration situations.

A TIE normally displays your NIE, but the card and the number have different functions.

Think of it this way:

NIE = number

TIE = physical card

A non-EU resident may therefore follow a sequence such as:

Residence authorization → NIE assigned → EX-17 → fingerprints → TIE

For the detailed card procedure, see EX-17 Spain: TIE Application, Documents and Fingerprints.

NIE vs EX-15: What Is the Difference?

The NIE is the number.

EX-15 is the form commonly used to request the number separately.

This distinction matters because people often search for an “NIE form” when their actual immigration procedure uses another form entirely.

EX-15 can be used for matters including:

  • assignment of an NIE;
  • certificate of residence;
  • certificate of non-residence;
  • certain other foreigner certificates.

If you specifically need to complete the form, see the dedicated EX-15 Form Spain guide.

That page explains the procedural details of EX-15.

NIE vs EX-18 for EU Citizens

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens moving to Spain should be particularly careful about confusing EX-15 and EX-18.

EX-15

May be appropriate when you need a standalone NIE for a specific reason but are not completing EU residence registration.

EX-18

Used by qualifying EU, EEA and Swiss citizens registering their residence in Spain.

The resulting EU Registration Certificate contains the person’s NIE.

Therefore:

Need an NIE for a transaction → EX-15 may apply

Moving to Spain as an EU citizen and registering residence → EX-18 generally applies

Read the full EX-18 EU Citizen Registration guide before booking the wrong appointment.

Do You Actually Need to Apply for an NIE Separately?

Not always.

This is one of the most common unnecessary procedures newcomers attempt.

Your NIE may already have been assigned as part of another Spanish immigration or residence process.

Before applying separately, check documents such as your:

  • Spanish visa;
  • residence authorization;
  • TIE;
  • EU Registration Certificate;
  • previous Spanish immigration documents;
  • older tax documentation;
  • previous property documentation.

If an NIE has already been assigned to you, you should normally continue using the same number.

Do not intentionally apply for a second one.

Who Needs an NIE in Spain?

Foreigners may need an NIE when they have official, economic, professional or social dealings with Spain.

Common situations include:

  • buying Spanish property;
  • selling Spanish property;
  • accepting an inheritance;
  • working in Spain;
  • establishing a company;
  • becoming a company director or shareholder;
  • dealing with Spanish taxes;
  • completing certain notarial procedures;
  • registering certain investments;
  • purchasing or registering a vehicle;
  • obtaining financing or a mortgage;
  • dealing with Spanish public authorities;
  • completing immigration or residence procedures.

However, an NIE is not automatically required for every private activity.

The correct question is not:

“Does every foreigner in Spain need an NIE?”

It is:

“Does my particular Spanish administrative, legal or economic procedure require me to have an NIE?”

Can You Get an NIE Without Living in Spain?

Yes.

You do not have to become a Spanish resident simply to obtain an NIE.

This is particularly important for people who live abroad but have dealings with Spain.

Examples include someone who:

  • buys a holiday property;
  • inherits Spanish assets;
  • becomes involved in a Spanish company;
  • needs to complete a Spanish tax procedure;
  • signs a transaction before a Spanish notary;
  • carries out another qualifying economic or professional activity.

The NIE identifies the person in Spain.

It does not make them resident.

Can You Get an NIE Before Moving to Spain?

Potentially, yes.

There are several ways a standalone NIE may be requested depending on your circumstances.

Apply in Spain Personally

An eligible applicant who is lawfully in Spain can request the NIE through the competent police or immigration authority.

An appointment is commonly required.

Apply Through a Representative in Spain

Spanish rules permit a properly authorized representative to present a standalone NIE request where the applicable requirements are satisfied.

The authorization must be sufficient for the NIE application.

This can be useful for property buyers, investors, business owners and others who need the number but are not yet living in Spain.

Apply Through a Spanish Consulate Abroad

A person outside Spain may also request a standalone NIE through the Spanish consular office responsible for their place of residence.

The consular office transmits the request to the competent Spanish authority.

Individual consulates can have their own appointment and document-submission arrangements.

Can Newcomer.es Help Obtain an NIE Remotely?

Newcomer.es can help assess whether a remote NIE procedure is appropriate for your situation and coordinate the administrative process where representation is legally available.

Support may include:

  • checking whether you already have an NIE;
  • determining whether a standalone NIE is appropriate;
  • identifying the reason for the application;
  • coordinating EX-15 preparation;
  • organizing supporting documentation;
  • coordinating a suitable power of attorney;
  • reviewing apostille or legalization requirements;
  • arranging sworn translations where required;
  • coordinating the applicable fee;
  • preparing the application dossier;
  • working with the authorized representative in Spain.

A representative cannot replace personal attendance in every Spanish immigration procedure.

For example, fingerprint-based TIE procedures and certain residence registrations can require the applicant to appear personally.

What Are the Requirements for a Standalone NIE?

For a standalone NIE requested because of economic, professional, social or another qualifying connection with Spain, two conditions are particularly important:

  1. The applicant must not be in Spain in an irregular immigration situation.
  2. The reason for requesting the NIE must be communicated.

The reason should be genuine.

Depending on the case, documents may be needed to demonstrate why the NIE is required.

What Documents Do You Need for an NIE?

The precise documentation depends on the procedure and your circumstances.

For a standard standalone NIE request, the core documentation can include:

DocumentPurpose
EX-15Standalone NIE/certificate application
Valid passport or identity documentConfirms identity
Copy of the applicable identity documentIncluded with the application
Evidence explaining why the NIE is requiredDemonstrates the reason for applying
Modelo 790 Código 012Government fee
Proof of fee paymentConfirms payment
Power of attorneyRequired where a representative applies
Representative’s IDIdentifies the representative
Apostille/legalization and translationMay apply to certain foreign public documents

The supporting evidence depends on why you need the NIE.

For example, someone purchasing property might use documentation relating to the proposed transaction.

A business founder may have company documentation.

An heir may have inheritance-related documents.

The evidence should correspond logically with the reason stated on the application.

For detailed form preparation, see How to Complete EX-15 in Spain.

How Much Does an NIE Cost in Spain?

The current government fee for an NIE assigned at the applicant’s request is:

€9.84

The fee is normally associated with:

Modelo 790, Código 012

Government fees can change, so the amount should be checked again when the application is prepared.

The cost of the government fee should also be distinguished from optional professional services such as:

  • document preparation;
  • representation;
  • power of attorney;
  • notarization;
  • apostille;
  • sworn translation;
  • administrative assistance.

How Long Does It Take to Get an NIE?

The official procedure provides a maximum period of five days to resolve and notify a standalone NIE request once the application has entered the register of the competent authority.

But this does not mean every person can obtain an NIE within five days of deciding they want one.

The total practical timeline may also include:

finding an appointment → preparing documents → paying the fee → submitting the application → official processing

Appointment availability can vary considerably between provinces and offices.

Applications through a consulate can also involve additional transmission and administrative time.

For this reason, it is better to distinguish:

official resolution period

from

total real-world time required to complete the process

How Do You Get an NIE in Spain Step by Step?

1. Check Whether You Already Have One

Look at previous Spanish immigration, residence, tax and property documents.

If you already have an NIE, keep using it.

2. Decide Whether a Standalone NIE Is the Correct Procedure

You may instead need:

  • EX-18 EU residence registration;
  • a Spanish visa;
  • a residence authorization;
  • a TIE procedure;
  • another immigration process through which the NIE will be assigned.

The Spain Immigration Modelos and EX Forms hub can help distinguish between the main forms.

3. Establish Why You Need the NIE

Identify the actual economic, professional, social or administrative reason.

4. Prepare the Supporting Evidence

The supporting documents should correspond with that reason.

5. Prepare EX-15

Complete the form accurately and make sure your personal information matches your identity documents.

6. Prepare and Pay the Applicable Fee

For a standalone NIE assignment, this normally involves Modelo 790 Código 012.

7. Determine Where You Will Apply

Depending on the case, this could be:

  • personally in Spain;
  • through an authorized representative in Spain;
  • through the competent Spanish consulate abroad.

8. Submit the Application

Present the required documentation through the correct procedure.

9. Keep the NIE Safely

Once assigned, keep a digital and physical record of the number.

You will use the same NIE for future Spanish administrative procedures.

Can You Get an NIE to Buy Property in Spain?

Yes, purchasing property is one of the situations in which a foreign buyer can have a legitimate economic reason for requiring an NIE.

But obtaining an NIE does not give the buyer Spanish residence.

These are separate issues.

For example:

Buy Spanish property → NIE may be required

does not mean:

Buy Spanish property → automatic Spanish residency

If you plan to live in the property permanently, your immigration or EU residence position should be considered separately.

Can You Get an NIE to Open a Bank Account?

An NIE can be requested by banks in many situations, particularly when opening accounts for Spanish residents or completing financial procedures.

However, not every bank and every type of account has identical documentation requirements.

Some institutions may offer certain non-resident banking products using other identification documents.

If banking is part of your relocation, see How to Open a Bank Account in Spain as a Foreigner.

Do You Need an NIE to Work in Spain?

An NIE is commonly required within Spanish employment and administrative systems.

But having an NIE does not give a non-EU citizen the legal right to work.

This distinction is critical:

NIE = identification

Work authorization = legal permission to work where immigration rules require it

A foreign worker may therefore have an NIE but still need the correct immigration authorization before legally starting employment.

Is an NIE the Same as a Social Security Number?

No.

Spain’s Social Security identification system is separate from the NIE.

You can encounter both numbers during employment and administrative procedures.

For someone beginning work in Spain, several separate processes can therefore interact:

immigration status + NIE + Social Security + tax registration + employment registration

Do not assume that completing one automatically completes all the others.

Is an NIE the Same as a NIF?

Not exactly.

NIF refers to a Spanish tax identification number.

For many foreign individuals who have been assigned an NIE, the NIE is also used as their tax identification number in dealings with the Spanish tax system.

The concepts are therefore closely connected, but NIE and NIF describe different administrative functions:

NIE → foreigner’s identification number

NIF → tax identification

Does an NIE Make You a Spanish Tax Resident?

No.

Obtaining an NIE does not, by itself, determine Spanish tax residence.

A person may have an NIE because they own property in Spain while continuing to be tax resident elsewhere.

Conversely, someone who moves to Spain may become subject to Spanish tax-residence rules based on their circumstances.

Immigration residence and tax residence should always be treated as separate questions.

Does an NIE Expire?

The NIE number itself does not expire.

Once assigned, it remains associated with the same person.

However, documents on which the NIE appears may expire or be replaced.

For example:

  • passport;
  • TIE;
  • visa;
  • residence card;
  • certain certificates.

The fact that one of these documents expires does not normally mean that you receive a new NIE.

What Happens After You Receive Your NIE?

What comes next depends on why you obtained it.

If you are moving to Spain, you may still need procedures such as:

  • residence authorization;
  • TIE;
  • EU residence registration;
  • empadronamiento;
  • Social Security registration;
  • tax registration;
  • bank account setup;
  • healthcare registration;
  • Digital Certificate.

This is why Newcomer.es treats the NIE as one part of a wider relocation sequence rather than as an isolated document.

NIE in Alicante, Benidorm and the Costa Blanca

The underlying NIE rules are national, but the practical process can vary by province and local office.

Foreigners living in or moving to:

  • Alicante;
  • Benidorm;
  • Torrevieja;
  • Altea;
  • Calpe;
  • Jávea;
  • Dénia;
  • Elche;
  • Orihuela Costa;
  • Santa Pola;

may need to deal with the competent police or immigration office serving their location.

Appointment availability and local administrative organization can differ even though the underlying NIE rules are the same.

NIE in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Málaga and Other Spanish Cities

The same principle applies throughout Spain.

An NIE is a national identification number.

There is no separate:

  • Madrid NIE;
  • Barcelona NIE;
  • Alicante NIE;
  • Málaga NIE;
  • Valencia NIE.

Your number remains the same regardless of where you live or conduct business in Spain.

What can differ is the office handling the application and the availability of appointments.

Common NIE Mistakes to Avoid

Applying for a Second NIE

If you already have an NIE, do not intentionally request a new number.

Check previous documents first.

Confusing NIE With Residency

An NIE does not prove that you have permission to live in Spain.

Using EX-15 When You Actually Need EX-18

EU citizens moving to Spain for more than three months should examine EU residence registration rather than assuming that a standalone NIE is sufficient.

Applying for EX-15 When Your Visa Process Will Assign an NIE

Non-EU applicants should determine whether their immigration procedure will already result in an NIE.

Providing No Clear Reason for the Application

A standalone NIE request requires a reason connected with Spain.

Booking the Wrong Appointment

Spanish appointment systems contain several similar foreigner procedures.

The category must correspond to what you actually need.

Paying the Wrong Fee

Different foreigner procedures have different fee categories.

Do not assume every Modelo 790 Código 012 payment is identical.

Confusing NIE With TIE

EX-15 and EX-17 serve different functions.

Assuming an NIE Gives Work Rights

It does not.

Waiting Until the Last Moment

Property transactions, company formation and other procedures can be delayed if the NIE has not been organized in advance.

NIE Application Checklist

Before starting a standalone NIE application, check that you have:

  • confirmed that you do not already have an NIE;
  • identified the correct procedure;
  • established a genuine reason for requesting the number;
  • prepared your valid passport or applicable identity document;
  • prepared the required copies;
  • completed EX-15;
  • prepared supporting evidence;
  • generated the correct Modelo 790 Código 012;
  • paid the applicable fee;
  • retained proof of payment;
  • booked the correct appointment where required;
  • prepared representation documents where applicable;
  • checked apostille or legalization requirements;
  • arranged sworn translation where necessary;
  • kept a complete copy of your dossier.

How Newcomer.es Can Help With Your NIE

The difficult part of obtaining an NIE is often not the number itself.

Frequently Asked Questions About the NIE Number in Spain

What Is an NIE Number in Spain?

An NIE is the personal identification number assigned to foreigners who have qualifying economic, professional, social or other dealings with Spain.

Is an NIE a Spanish Residence Permit?

No. An NIE identifies a foreign national but does not by itself grant residence in Spain.

Can I Have an NIE Without Being a Spanish Resident?

Yes. Non-residents can have an NIE where they have a qualifying reason connected with Spain.

What Form Do I Need for an NIE?

EX-15 is commonly used for a standalone NIE assignment and certain foreigner certificates.

How Much Does an NIE Cost?

The current government fee for a standalone NIE assignment at the applicant’s request is €9.84. Government fees can change.

Can I Get an NIE From Outside Spain?

Yes. A person outside Spain can request an NIE through the competent Spanish consular office for their place of residence.

Can Someone Apply for My NIE in Spain?

A properly authorized representative may be able to present a standalone NIE request in Spain. The authorization must expressly provide sufficient power for the application.

How Long Does an NIE Take?

The official maximum resolution period for a standalone NIE request is five days after the application enters the register of the competent authority. Appointment and preparation time comes before that and can extend the overall process.

Does an NIE Expire?

The NIE number itself remains assigned to the same person and does not need to be renewed simply because another Spanish document expires.

Is NIE the Same as TIE?

No. The NIE is an identification number. The TIE is a physical foreigner identity card issued in qualifying immigration situations.

Is NIE the Same as EX-15?

No. NIE is the number. EX-15 is the form commonly used to request a standalone NIE.

Do EU Citizens Need an NIE?

EU citizens commonly receive or use an NIE in Spain, but someone moving to Spain as an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen should determine whether EX-18 residence registration applies rather than simply applying for EX-15.

Do British Citizens Use EX-18 for an NIE?

British-only nationals moving to Spain after Brexit do not generally use the ordinary EU citizen registration route solely because British citizens used it before Brexit. Their correct procedure depends on their current immigration status and circumstances.

Can I Work in Spain With Only an NIE?

No. An NIE does not replace any work authorization required by Spanish immigration law.

Can I Buy Property With an NIE but Live Outside Spain?

Yes. Property ownership and Spanish immigration residence are separate legal issues.

Does Getting an NIE Make Me a Spanish Tax Resident?

No. Tax residence is determined under separate tax rules and does not arise simply because an NIE has been assigned.

Start With the Correct NIE Procedure

The most important step is not downloading EX-15.

It is first determining why you need an NIE and whether a standalone NIE application is actually the correct procedure.

For many newcomers, the correct sequence is:

Identify your situation → check whether you already have an NIE → choose the correct procedure → prepare documents → pay the correct fee → submit → use the same NIE throughout your life in Spain
