This tool calculates filing dates only. It does not determine whether you meet the substantive renewal requirements. A Newcomer “URGENT” status is a planning indicator for the final 14 days before expiry, not a separate legal deadline. Where late filing is allowed, it may still lead to sanction proceedings.
How to Use the Spain Residence Permit Renewal Window Calculator
Use this calculator to estimate when you can start filing your Spanish residence renewal, when your current permit expires and, where the selected procedure allows it, the last date on which a late application may still be filed.
Step 1: Select Your Permit or Procedure
Choose the immigration status or procedure that matches your current authorization.
The calculator currently supports selected routes including:
- Non-Lucrative residence
- Family reunification residence
- Residence and work as an employee
- Residence and work as self-employed
- Digital Nomad / UGE residence authorization
- Highly Qualified Professional residence
- Digital Nomad Visa to residence authorization
Choosing the correct category is important because not every Spanish residence procedure uses the same renewal window.
For example, some residence renewals are calculated using calendar months, while certain UGE-managed authorizations use calendar days.
Step 2: Enter the Expiry Date
Enter the expiry date of the immigration authorization you are renewing.
For most residence-permit renewals, use the expiry date associated with your current residence authorization.
If you are using the Digital Nomad Visa → Residence option, enter the expiry date of the Digital Nomad Visa.
Do not enter:
- your passport expiry date;
- your appointment date;
- the date you originally applied;
- the date you entered Spain;
- the date you collected your TIE.
The calculator needs the expiry date of the relevant permit, authorization or visa.
Step 3: Calculate Your Renewal Window
Click the calculation button.
The calculator will determine the relevant filing dates using the currently published Newcomer Rules for the procedure you selected.
Your result may show:
You can renew from
The first date on which the normal filing window begins.
Your permit expires on
The expiration date you entered.
Last day to file late
Where late filing is permitted for the selected procedure, this is the calculated final date of that late-filing period.
What to do next
A practical Newcomer planning message based on how close you are to the filing window or expiry date.
Step 4: Read Your Status
Depending on today’s date and your expiry date, the calculator can return different statuses.
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| TOO EARLY | Your normal renewal filing window has not opened yet |
| WINDOW OPEN | You are currently within the normal filing period |
| URGENT | Your permit is approaching expiry and action should be prioritized |
| LATE | Your permit has expired, but the selected procedure still has a late-filing period |
| WINDOW CLOSED | The calculated late-filing period has also passed |
URGENT is a Newcomer planning indicator, not a separate legal deadline. It is designed to help you avoid leaving a renewal until the final days.
Step 5: Check the Rule Information
The result also displays the rule and calculation basis used.
This is important because Spanish immigration deadlines can depend on the type of authorization.
Rather than permanently hard-coding every filing period into the calculator interface, Newcomer resolves the currently published rule for the selected procedure.
When Can You Renew a Residence Permit in Spain?
There is no single renewal deadline that applies identically to every Spanish immigration authorization.
The correct filing period depends on the legal route under which your permit was issued.
For many temporary residence permits governed by Spain’s general immigration regulations, the standard renewal window begins two calendar months before the authorization expires.
For relevant UGE and international-mobility authorizations, the filing period may instead be expressed as 60 calendar days before expiry.
That difference matters.
Two calendar months and 60 calendar days can produce different dates depending on the months involved.
The calculator therefore uses the rule applicable to the selected immigration category instead of assuming that every Spanish permit follows the same number of days.
Standard Residence Renewal Window in Spain
For several common temporary residence categories, the normal filing period begins during the:
two calendar months before the current authorization expires.
Where the applicable procedure permits late filing, an application may also be submitted during the:
three calendar months after expiry.
This structure applies to important residence categories such as Non-Lucrative residence and various residence-and-work authorizations.
For example, if a qualifying permit expires on:
10 December 2028
a two-calendar-month renewal window would normally begin on:
10 October 2028
and a three-calendar-month late period would reach:
10 March 2029
The calculator performs these calendar calculations automatically.
If you hold Non-Lucrative residence, read our Spain Non-Lucrative Visa and residence guide for the wider renewal requirements.
You can also use the Spain Non-Lucrative Visa Financial Requirements Calculator when checking the financial side of the route.
UGE and Ley 14/2013 Renewal Window
Spain has a separate international-mobility framework for certain immigration categories processed through the Unidad de Grandes Empresas y Colectivos Estratégicos — UGE-CE.
These can include routes such as:
- international teleworkers / Digital Nomads;
- Highly Qualified Professionals;
- entrepreneurs;
- researchers;
- intra-company transfers;
- qualifying family members.
For qualifying UGE renewals covered by the calculator, the filing window is calculated using:
60 calendar days before expiry
and, where applicable:
90 calendar days after expiry.
This is different from the two-month / three-month structure used by several general immigration permits.
If you hold an international teleworker authorization, see our Spain Digital Nomad Visa guide for the wider eligibility and residence requirements.
You can also check the current financial threshold with the Spain Digital Nomad Visa Income Calculator.
Digital Nomad Visa to Residence Authorization
A Digital Nomad Visa holder who wants to continue residing in Spain can face a different type of deadline.
This is not simply the same calculation as renewing an existing residence authorization.
For the Digital Nomad Visa → residence authorization procedure, the calculator uses the applicable filing window before the visa expires.
The current rule used by the calculator allows the relevant application during the:
60 calendar days before expiration of the Digital Nomad Visa.
Therefore, when selecting this option, make sure you enter the visa expiry date, not an unrelated TIE, passport or travel date.
For the complete route, read the Spain Digital Nomad Visa guide.
Can You Renew a Spanish Residence Permit After It Expires?
For some residence categories, yes — but this should not be treated as the normal strategy.
Spanish immigration rules for several renewal procedures provide a period after expiry during which the renewal application may still be submitted.
However, late filing can carry important consequences.
Depending on the applicable procedure, filing after expiry can expose the applicant to a possible sanctioning procedure.
That is why the calculator distinguishes between:
normal filing period
and:
late-filing period
rather than treating them as equally desirable options.
The safer planning approach is:
prepare before the window opens → file during the normal renewal period → avoid relying on the late period.
Does Filing a Renewal Extend Your Existing Authorization?
For important Spanish renewal procedures, a properly submitted renewal application within the applicable period can extend the validity of the previous authorization while the renewal is being decided.
This can be extremely important for maintaining continuity of immigration status.
However, the exact procedural effect depends on the type of application and whether the filing satisfies the relevant requirements.
The calculator tells you when the filing window applies.
It does not confirm that an application has actually been validly submitted or accepted by the competent authority.
Keep proof of electronic submission, registration receipts and official notifications after filing.
Should You Wait Until Your TIE Is About to Expire?
No.
A residence renewal is usually more than a date calculation.
Before filing you may need to collect or update:
- passport documentation;
- financial evidence;
- employment records;
- Social Security information;
- tax records;
- health-insurance evidence;
- family documentation;
- empadronamiento or address evidence where relevant;
- government forms;
- fee payments;
- supporting declarations;
- electronic certificates or representative authorizations.
Some documents can take days or weeks to obtain.
The best date to start preparing is therefore usually earlier than the first legal filing date.
That is why Newcomer shows a What to do next section rather than merely returning a deadline.
Is the TIE Expiry Date the Same as the Residence Renewal Deadline?
Not exactly.
The TIE is the physical foreigner identity card.
The underlying residence authorization is your immigration status.
The card normally reflects information about that authorization, including its validity, but legally the residence authorization and the physical card are not the same thing.
When planning a renewal, the key issue is the expiry of the immigration authorization you are renewing.
After a successful renewal, you may then need to obtain a new physical TIE.
Read our TIE Card Spain guide for the card procedure and the distinction between the TIE and residence authorization.
Example 1: Non-Lucrative Residence Renewal
Assume your qualifying Non-Lucrative residence authorization expires on:
10 December 2028
The standard rule used by the calculator is:
2 calendar months before expiry
and:
up to 3 calendar months after expiry for late filing.
The calculator would therefore show approximately:
You can renew from:
10 October 2028
Your permit expires on:
10 December 2028
Last day to file late:
10 March 2029
The goal should normally be to file during the standard period rather than wait until after 10 December.
If you hold this residence category, see the Spain Non-Lucrative Visa guide and our EX-01 Non-Lucrative Residence form guide.
Example 2: UGE Residence Authorization
Assume a qualifying UGE residence authorization expires on:
10 December 2028
For a procedure using the 60/90-day rule, the calculator works in calendar days rather than calendar months.
It calculates:
60 calendar days before expiry
for the normal opening date and:
90 calendar days after expiry
for the late-filing limit where that late period applies.
This is precisely why it is better to use a date calculator rather than simply assuming that “two months” always means “60 days.”
Example 3: Digital Nomad Visa Holder
Assume your Digital Nomad Visa expires on:
10 December 2028
If you want to continue residing in Spain through the relevant international teleworker residence authorization, select:
Digital Nomad Visa → Residence
and enter:
10 December 2028
The calculator determines the filing opening date by counting back the applicable 60 calendar days.
This calculation should not be confused with the later renewal of an existing international teleworker residence authorization.
They are different procedures.
What Happens If My Residence Permit Has Already Expired?
First, do not assume that the situation is automatically lost.
Some supported residence-renewal procedures permit filing after the expiry date for a limited period.
Use the calculator to determine whether the selected procedure is still within its calculated late-filing window.
If the result shows:
LATE
the tool is indicating that the normal period has passed but the published rule used for that category still provides a late-filing period.
If the result shows:
WINDOW CLOSED
the calculated late period has also passed.
At that point, the correct legal strategy may depend heavily on your precise immigration status, filing history and circumstances.
Do not rely on the calculator alone for an expired authorization.
See our Immigration Services in Spain if your permit has already expired or you are unsure which procedure applies.
What Documents Do You Need to Renew a Spanish Residence Permit?
There is no universal renewal-document list for every immigration category.
The required evidence depends on the residence route.
For example:
Non-Lucrative Residence
The renewal can involve continued financial resources, qualifying health insurance, residence-history requirements and other supporting evidence.
Employee Residence
The authorities may examine employment history, current employment circumstances and Social Security information.
Self-Employed Residence
The renewal can involve evidence relating to continued professional or business activity, tax obligations and Social Security.
Digital Nomad / UGE
The applicant must normally continue meeting the conditions relevant to the authorization under which residence was granted.
Family Residence
The renewal requirements depend on the family route, the sponsor and the status under which residence was obtained.
For family-related routes, see our Spain Family Reunification Visa guide.
Renewal Is Not the Same as Modification
This distinction is important.
A renewal generally means continuing substantially within the same immigration category.
For example:
Non-Lucrative residence → renewed Non-Lucrative residence
or:
employee residence → renewed employee residence
A modification involves moving from one immigration status or authorization structure to another.
For example:
study status → employee residence
or:
Non-Lucrative residence → work-authorized residence
A renewal-window calculator should not automatically be used to calculate the filing date for a completely different modification procedure.
If your circumstances have changed significantly, first determine whether you need a renewal or a modification.
Why Does the Calculator Use Calendar Months for Some Permits and Calendar Days for Others?
Because that is how the underlying immigration rules are expressed.
For selected general-regime renewals, the applicable period is expressed in months.
For selected UGE and international-mobility procedures, the applicable period is expressed in calendar days.
Newcomer preserves this distinction.
We do not convert every rule into an approximate number such as:
“60 days = two months.”
That shortcut can produce the wrong date.
For example, calendar months vary in length.
The calculator therefore follows the actual calculation unit contained in the published Newcomer Rule for the selected procedure.
Why Can Residence Renewal Dates Change?
Spanish immigration legislation and administrative procedures can change.
A future regulatory change can affect:
- when a renewal window begins;
- whether late filing is allowed;
- how long the late period lasts;
- which authority handles the application;
- application forms;
- required documentation;
- eligibility requirements.
Newcomer separates these legal rules from the visual calculator itself.
When an applicable rule changes, a new rule version can be published without permanently rewriting the legal dates inside the calculator interface.
The result includes information about the rule used for the calculation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How early can I renew my residence permit in Spain?
It depends on your permit. Many general temporary residence renewals use a window beginning two calendar months before expiry, while certain UGE procedures use 60 calendar days before expiry.
Use the calculator and select the correct permit type rather than applying one generic deadline to every residence category.
Can I renew my Spanish residence permit three months before expiry?
Not necessarily.
For many permits in this calculator, the standard filing window begins two months before expiry rather than three months before.
Other immigration procedures may use different periods.
Can I renew my TIE before it expires?
The immigration authorization normally needs to be renewed first or otherwise remain valid under the applicable procedure. The physical TIE and the underlying residence authorization should not be confused.
After a successful residence renewal, a new TIE may need to be requested.
What happens if my TIE expires while my renewal is pending?
For important renewal procedures, timely submission can extend the validity of the previous authorization until the administration decides the renewal.
Keep evidence that the renewal was properly filed.
The physical TIE card itself may show an expired date while the underlying immigration situation is governed by the pending-renewal rules.
Can I file a renewal after my residence permit expires?
Some procedures allow a limited late-filing period.
For many general temporary residence renewals in the calculator, this can extend up to three calendar months after expiry.
For qualifying UGE renewals, the relevant late period may be 90 calendar days.
Late filing can nevertheless create a risk of sanction and should not be treated as the preferred filing strategy.
Is 60 days the same as two months?
No.
Sometimes they produce the same or a similar date, but legally and mathematically they are different calculations.
That is why the calculator keeps calendar months and calendar days separate.
What date should I enter in the calculator?
Enter the expiration date of the residence authorization or visa relevant to the procedure selected.
Do not enter your passport expiry date or the date of your immigration appointment.
Does the calculator guarantee that my residence will be renewed?
No.
The calculator determines a filing window based on the selected procedure and currently published Newcomer Rules.
Renewal approval depends on continuing to satisfy the substantive legal requirements and submitting a valid application with the required evidence.
Should I wait until the renewal window opens before preparing documents?
No.
You can often begin preparing documents much earlier.
The filing window determines when the application may be submitted; it does not mean you should wait until that date to begin preparing.
What if I selected the wrong permit type?
Run the calculation again with the correct category.
Because different residence routes can use different legal deadlines, choosing the correct permit or procedure is essential.
Start Preparing Your Renewal Before the Deadline
A Spanish residence renewal should not begin with:
“My TIE expires next week. What do I do?”
A better process is:
Check expiry date → identify the correct permit → calculate the renewal window → review continuing eligibility → prepare documents → file during the normal period → keep proof of submission → complete the new TIE procedure when required.
Use the calculator above to establish the timing.
Then review the requirements applicable to your route:
- Spain Non-Lucrative Visa and Residence
- Spain Digital Nomad Visa
- Spain Family Reunification Visa
- TIE Card Spain
- First 30 Days in Spain
If your permit is approaching expiry, has already expired, or your circumstances have changed since the original authorization, see our Immigration Services in Spain for assistance with the next step.
