How to Use the Foreign Driving Licence Calculator
Use this calculator to check:
- whether your current foreign driving licence may still be valid for driving in Spain;
- the date when your normal right to use it in Spain may end;
- whether Spain has a standard licence-exchange route for the issuing country;
- whether you may need to renew, exchange or obtain a Spanish driving licence;
- what you should do next.
Step 1: Select the Country That Issued Your Licence
Choose the country that issued your current driving licence.
This matters because Spain treats licences differently depending on whether they were issued by:
- an EU or EEA country;
- a non-EU country with a driving-licence exchange agreement with Spain;
- a country without a standard exchange agreement.
Do not select your nationality unless it is also the country that actually issued the licence.
Step 2: Enter the Licence Expiry Date
Enter the expiry date printed on your current driving licence.
The calculator compares this date with any Spain-specific validity deadline.
The earlier date can become the important one.

Licence itself expires: 1 January 2028
Foreign licence can be used in Spain until: 10 November 2026
In that case, the Spanish driving deadline arrives first.

Step 4: Enter When Your Normal Residence in Spain Began
For many non-EU licences, this is one of the most important dates in the calculation.
Enter the date when you became normally resident in Spain.
Do not automatically use:
- your first holiday in Spain;
- your NIE date;
- your padrón date;
- your first Spanish rental contract;
- your TIE collection date.
If you are not certain which date should be used, choose Not sure.
The calculator will return REVIEW REQUIRED rather than inventing a potentially incorrect driving deadline.
Step 5: Tell Us When the Licence Was Obtained
The calculator may ask whether the foreign licence was obtained before you became resident in Spain.
This can matter for a future exchange.
For many non-EU exchange agreements, a licence obtained only after the person was already resident in Spain may not qualify for a standard canje.
Step 6: Tell Us Whether the Licence Was Previously Exchanged
If your current licence was obtained by exchanging a licence from another country, answer this question carefully.
The original licence history can affect whether Spain accepts another exchange.

How Long Can You Drive in Spain With a Foreign Licence?
The answer depends mainly on where the licence was issued and whether you are resident in Spain.
There is no single rule that applies to every foreign licence.
The biggest distinction is between:
EU/EEA driving licences
and:
non-EU/EEA driving licences.
Non-EU Driving Licence: The 6-Month Rule
For many qualifying licences issued outside the EU and EEA, the normal residence-based validity period is:
a maximum of 6 months after acquiring normal residence in Spain.
The licence must also:
- remain valid;
- satisfy the applicable format or international-convention requirements;
- correspond to the driver’s age and permitted vehicle category.
After the normal six-month period ends, the foreign licence generally cannot simply continue being used indefinitely in Spain.
The next step depends on whether the licence can be exchanged.
Example
Normal residence in Spain begins:
12 May 2026
Standard six-calendar-month point:
12 November 2026
Foreign licence itself expires:
1 January 2028
The relevant Spain-specific deadline would normally arrive first:
12 November 2026
That is why the calculator shows both dates separately.
Is 6 Months the Same as 180 Days?
Not necessarily.
The rule is expressed in months.
Calendar months have different lengths, so treating every six-month period as exactly 180 days can produce a different date.
The calculator therefore uses the residence date and calculates the applicable calendar period instead of asking you to convert it yourself.
What Happens After the 6 Months End?
If your foreign licence is no longer valid for driving in Spain, there are usually two possible paths.
If Spain Has an Exchange Agreement With the Issuing Country
You may be able to exchange the foreign licence for a Spanish driving licence.
This process is commonly called:
canje del permiso de conducir
If There Is No Standard Exchange Agreement
You may need to obtain a new Spanish driving licence through the normal Spanish licensing process.
For certain professional drivers, additional special routes can exist, so professional heavy-vehicle cases should not always be treated the same way as an ordinary private car licence.
Which Countries Can Exchange Driving Licences With Spain?
Spain has:
- EU/EEA recognition and exchange arrangements;
- bilateral agreements with a number of non-EU countries.
The list can change when new agreements enter into force or existing arrangements are modified.
That is why the Newcomer calculator does not permanently write the country list into the page text.
Instead, the country mapping is maintained separately in the Newcomer Rules system.

Can a UK Driving Licence Be Exchanged in Spain?
Spain and the United Kingdom have a driving-licence exchange arrangement.
However, the calculator still needs the relevant information about:
- when your Spanish residence began;
- when the licence was obtained;
- whether the licence remains valid;
- the categories held;
- whether the licence itself originated from a previous exchange.
The existence of an agreement does not mean every licence in every situation is automatically exchangeable.
Can an American Driving Licence Be Exchanged in Spain?
The United States does not have a general standard private driving-licence exchange arrangement with Spain of the same type available to countries covered by current DGT agreements.
Therefore, someone moving from the United States should not assume that a normal American car licence can simply be swapped for a Spanish licence after the residence-based validity period ends.
Use the calculator to check the current country status and plan early if a Spanish licence may be required.
Can a Canadian Driving Licence Be Exchanged in Spain?
Do not assume that having a licence from a major non-EU country automatically creates a standard canje.
The correct answer depends on whether that issuing country is covered by Spain’s current exchange arrangements.
Use the country selector rather than relying on old forum posts or relocation articles.
Are EU and EEA Driving Licences Valid in Spain?
A valid EU/EEA driving licence is generally recognized for driving in Spain while the licence remains in force.
For most ordinary licences, exchanging it for a Spanish licence is normally voluntary.
This is very different from the standard six-month rule that applies to many non-EU licences.
When Must an EU/EEA Licence Be Renewed in Spain?
A special rule applies to certain licences with indefinite or unusually long validity periods.
After establishing normal residence in Spain for two years, Spanish renewal can become necessary where the EU/EEA licence:
has no expiry date
or has validity longer than:
15 years for car and motorcycle categories
or:
5 years for truck and bus categories.
The calculator can identify situations where Spanish renewal may be required.

If the licence has a normal validity period and remains in force, the six-month non-EU rule does not apply.
The calculator may therefore show that the licence remains valid while also reminding you about its actual expiry date.
Example: Long-Validity EU Licence
Suppose you have a qualifying EU car licence with an unusually long validity period.
Normal residence in Spain begins:
10 October 2026
If the licence falls within the long-validity rule, Spanish renewal can become necessary after:
2 years of normal residence.
The calculator can identify this instead of incorrectly telling you to follow the non-EU six-month rule.
Is Exchanging an EU Licence Mandatory?
Usually not.
For an ordinary in-force EU/EEA licence, exchange is generally voluntary.
However, renewal rules can become mandatory for certain indefinite or long-validity licences.
There is therefore an important difference between:
voluntary exchange
and:
mandatory Spanish renewal.
Does an International Driving Permit Extend the 6-Month Period?
An International Driving Permit should not be treated as a way to extend the residence-based validity of the underlying foreign licence.
An international permit is a complementary document used together with the original driving licence.
It does not turn an otherwise invalid foreign licence into a permanently valid Spanish driving licence.
If you become resident in Spain, check the rules applying to the original licence.
Do Tourists Have the Same 6-Month Rule?
The calculator is primarily designed for people who are living in Spain or becoming resident in Spain.
The six-month residence calculation relates to acquiring normal residence.
A visitor or tourist has a different factual situation.
Do not enter a Spanish residence date simply because you are spending a short holiday in Spain.
What Does “Normal Residence in Spain” Mean?
Driving-licence rules use the concept of normal residence.
This should not automatically be reduced to:
the date you received an NIE
or:
the date you registered on the padrón.
Your actual residence circumstances matter.
If you are uncertain about the correct start date, use Not sure and review the result before relying on a deadline.

Can You Exchange a Licence Obtained After Becoming Resident in Spain?
For many non-EU exchange arrangements, this can be a major problem.
A foreign licence obtained after the holder was already legally resident in Spain may normally not qualify for standard exchange.
There are country-specific exceptions.
That is why the calculator asks:
Was this licence issued before you became resident in Spain?
Answer this carefully.
The existence of a country agreement alone is not enough.
What If My Current Licence Was Obtained by Exchanging Another Foreign Licence?
This can matter.
Suppose:
Country A does not have an exchange agreement with Spain.
You exchange that licence in Country B.
Country B does have an agreement with Spain.
That does not necessarily mean Spain must accept a second exchange based solely on the new Country B licence.
The origin and exchange history can be relevant.
If this applies to you, the calculator may show:
REVIEW REQUIRED
rather than an automatic EXCHANGE AVAILABLE result.
Do Car and Motorcycle Licences Require an Exam for Canje?
For many countries with current exchange agreements, ordinary private car and motorcycle categories can generally be exchanged without a Spanish driving test when the applicable conditions are satisfied.
However, country-specific conditions still matter.
This is why EXCHANGE AVAILABLE means that a standard exchange route appears to exist — not that DGT has already approved the individual canje.
What About Truck and Bus Licences?
Heavy-vehicle categories can be more complicated.
For licences involving truck or bus categories, DGT may require additional theoretical or practical testing depending on:
- issuing country;
- category;
- specific exchange agreement.
The calculator therefore avoids promising a test-free exchange for every professional licence.
Complex heavy-vehicle cases may show:
REVIEW REQUIRED.
What Does “Exchange Available” Mean?
EXCHANGE AVAILABLE means the issuing country and licence type appear to fall within a current standard exchange framework used by the calculator.
It does not mean:
- DGT has approved your application;
- every licence category will be exchanged without tests;
- every issue date qualifies;
- a previously exchanged licence will automatically qualify;
- an expired or suspended licence can automatically be exchanged.
The individual requirements still need to be satisfied.
What Does “Exchange Optional” Mean?
This usually relates to EU/EEA licences.
It means your existing licence can normally continue to be used while it remains valid and that exchanging it for a Spanish licence is not currently compulsory solely because you live in Spain.
A separate renewal obligation can still apply in long-validity cases.
What Does “Renew in Spain” Mean?
This means the calculator has identified a situation where Spanish renewal rules may apply to the foreign EU/EEA licence.
This is different from a normal bilateral canje of a non-EU licence.
Follow the renewal route applicable to your licence rather than assuming the six-month rule applies.
What Does “No Standard Exchange” Mean?
This means the issuing country does not appear to have a normal private driving-licence exchange route covered by the published rule used by the calculator.
You may need to obtain a Spanish driving licence through the normal Spanish process.
Professional-driver exceptions can exist in specific circumstances.
What Does “Review Required” Mean?
The calculator uses REVIEW REQUIRED when a safe automatic answer is not appropriate.
Examples include:
- uncertain normal-residence date;
- unclear licence issue date;
- licence obtained after Spanish residence;
- licence created through a previous exchange;
- heavy-vehicle categories;
- special country-specific restrictions;
- unusual licence format;
- uncertainty about whether the licence is active or valid.
This prevents the calculator from giving false certainty.
What If My Foreign Licence Has Already Expired?
An expired licence should not be treated as valid simply because its issuing country has an exchange agreement with Spain.
The calculator considers the expiry date of the licence separately from any Spain-specific residence deadline.
If the licence itself expires first, that date can become the immediate problem.
What If My Licence Is Suspended or Withdrawn?
A licence that has been suspended, withdrawn or is otherwise not in force should not be treated as valid merely because the printed expiry date is in the future.
That is why the calculator asks whether the licence is currently active.
What If My Licence Expires Before the Spanish 6-Month Deadline?
The earlier date matters.
Example:
Spanish six-month deadline:
15 December 2026
Foreign licence expiry:
1 October 2026
The licence cannot simply be treated as valid until December when it expires in October.
The calculator therefore compares both dates.
What If the 6-Month Deadline Comes First?

The licence can remain perfectly valid in the issuing country while no longer being valid for normal driving in Spain after the relevant Spanish deadline.
This is one of the most common misunderstandings among newcomers.
Should You Wait Until Month Six to Start a Canje?
No.
If you know your non-EU licence will need to be exchanged, start preparing before the six-month period ends.
The canje process can involve:
- identity and residence documentation;
- licence verification;
- confirmation from the issuing country;
- medical fitness requirements;
- DGT processing;
- appointments;
- category-specific requirements;
- additional tests in some cases.
The legal driving deadline and the administrative processing time are different things.
Start early.
What Should New Residents Do in Their First Month?
Driving-licence planning should be part of your arrival checklist.
Soon after settling in Spain:
- identify the issuing country;
- confirm whether your licence is valid;
- establish your relevant Spanish residence date;
- calculate any six-month deadline;
- check whether canje exists;
- begin exchange preparation early where necessary.

Driving Licence vs NIE, TIE and Residence Status
These documents serve different purposes.
NIE
A foreigner’s identification number.
TIE
The physical identity card documenting certain foreign residents’ status.
Residence authorization
Your underlying immigration status.
Driving licence
Your authorization to drive the relevant vehicle categories.
Receiving a TIE does not automatically exchange your foreign driving licence.
Likewise, having a foreign driving licence does not establish your Spanish immigration status.

Do not wait until you have been living in Spain for seven months to discover that your foreign licence may no longer be valid for driving.
A better sequence is:
Check your issuing country → confirm your licence expiry → identify your normal residence date → calculate your Spanish validity period → check canje → prepare the exchange or Spanish licence process → keep your driving status valid.
