Spain Visas

Spain Visa Options 2026: Find the Right Route to Live in Spain

Spain offers different visa and residence routes depending on why you want to move, where your income comes from, whether you intend to work, your nationality, and whether family members are moving with you.

For many non-EU citizens, the most relevant options include the Digital Nomad Visa, Non-Lucrative Visa, work permits, self-employed residence, the Entrepreneur Visa, student status and family residence.

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens generally follow a different residence-registration system rather than applying for one of these visas.

The important question is therefore not simply:

“How can I get a Spanish visa?”

It is:

“Which Spanish immigration route legally matches the life I intend to have after moving to Spain?”

Choosing correctly from the beginning can affect your right to work, family members, taxes, Social Security, renewals, long-term residence and eventually Spanish citizenship.

Do You Need a Visa to Live in Spain?

Your nationality and intended length and purpose of stay determine the immigration procedure you need.

EU, EEA and Swiss Citizens

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens generally do not need a Spanish immigration visa or ordinary work permit to relocate to Spain.

If you intend to remain in Spain for more than three months, however, residence registration will normally be required.

See our complete guide to moving to Spain as an EU citizen for information about EX-18 registration, NIE, healthcare, employment and residence formalities.

Non-EU Citizens

Non-EU nationals who intend to establish residence in Spain normally need a visa, residence authorization or another qualifying immigration status.

The correct route depends primarily on what you plan to do in Spain.

A remote employee working for a foreign company has very different immigration needs from a retiree, Spanish employee, entrepreneur or student.

Which Spain Visa Fits Your Situation?

Use this as a starting point:

Your situationRoute to explore
You work remotely for a foreign companyDigital Nomad Visa
You are an international freelancerDigital Nomad Visa or Self-Employed route
You are retired or live from savings/passive incomeNon-Lucrative Visa
You have a job offer from a Spanish employerWork Permit Visa
You are an executive or highly qualified specialistHighly Qualified Professional Permit or EU Blue Card
You want to freelance or operate a normal business in SpainSelf-Employed Visa
You want to build an innovative startupEntrepreneur Visa
You want to study in SpainStudent Visa
You are joining qualifying family in SpainFamily residence or reunification
You already live in Spain and may qualify through exceptional circumstancesArraigo
You only want a short visitTourist/Schengen route

For a more detailed side-by-side analysis, see our guide to comparing Spain visa options.

Digital Nomad Visa: For Remote Workers

Spain’s Digital Nomad route is designed primarily for qualifying non-EU professionals who perform remote employment or professional activity connected mainly with businesses outside Spain.

It can be particularly relevant for remote employees, consultants, developers, designers, technology professionals and some international freelancers.

This route is not simply permission to move to Spain because your job can be performed online. Applicants must satisfy specific professional, financial, documentation and Social Security requirements.

Read the complete Spain Digital Nomad Visa guide.

Best suited to

Remote employees and qualifying freelancers whose professional activity remains principally international.

Consider another route if

You intend to take ordinary employment with a Spanish company or operate a business focused primarily on the Spanish market.

Non-Lucrative Visa: For Retirees and Financially Independent Applicants

The Non-Lucrative Visa is one of Spain’s principal residence routes for non-EU citizens who have sufficient financial resources and do not intend to perform employment or professional activity while residing in Spain.

It is frequently considered by retirees, pension recipients and financially independent families.

The distinction between the Non-Lucrative Visa and Digital Nomad Visa is particularly important.

If you intend to continue working remotely after moving, do not choose the NLV simply because you can demonstrate sufficient savings.

See the full Spain Non-Lucrative Visa guide.

Best suited to

Retirees and applicants living from savings, pensions or qualifying passive financial resources.

Consider another route if

You intend to remain professionally active.

Spain Work Permit: For Employment With a Spanish Company

If you have an employment offer from a Spanish company, a Spanish residence and work authorization may be the appropriate route.

In many standard employment cases, the Spanish employer begins the immigration procedure.

The correct permit depends on the job, qualifications, salary, employer and circumstances of the applicant.

Read our Spain Work Permit Visa guide.

Applicants in senior or specialist positions should also examine whether they may qualify for Spain’s international mobility system instead of the standard work-permit route.

Highly Qualified Professional Permit

The Highly Qualified Professional route can be particularly relevant for executives, managers, engineers, technology specialists and other professionals taking qualifying positions in Spain.

It operates differently from an ordinary employee work authorization and can offer a more streamlined immigration path when the position and applicant satisfy the relevant requirements.

Read our guide to the Spain Highly Qualified Professional Visa.

Depending on the position and the applicant’s qualifications, the EU Blue Card may also be worth considering.

Self-Employed Visa: For Freelancers and Traditional Businesses

The Spanish self-employed route — often called the cuenta propia route — is designed for people who intend to establish genuine self-employment or operate a business in Spain.

It may be appropriate for:

  • Independent consultants
  • Freelancers serving Spanish clients
  • Tradespeople
  • Professional practices
  • Restaurant or shop owners
  • Local service businesses
  • Small-business founders

Applicants generally need to demonstrate that the proposed professional or business activity is realistic and legally viable.

See our complete Spain Self-Employed Visa and Cuenta Propia guide.

Entrepreneur Visa: For Innovative Startups

Spain’s Entrepreneur Visa should not be confused with the ordinary self-employed route.

It is intended for qualifying innovative entrepreneurial projects rather than simply anyone who wants to open a business.

Innovation, scalability, founder experience, economic value and the characteristics of the proposed project can all become important.

Read our complete Spain Entrepreneur Visa guide.

Entrepreneur Visa or Self-Employed Visa?

A traditional consulting business, shop, restaurant or local service company may fit the self-employed route better.

A scalable and innovative project with significant economic potential may be more appropriate for the Entrepreneur route.

Choosing between them should happen before company formation and immigration planning are separated into two unrelated processes.

Student Visa and Study Authorization

Non-EU citizens coming to Spain for qualifying education may need a student visa or study authorization.

Eligible situations can include certain university degrees, postgraduate programs, professional training and other recognized educational activities.

Work possibilities, family options and future modifications to another immigration status can depend on the type of study authorization.

See the complete Spain Student Visa guide.

Students planning to remain permanently in Spain should also understand that study status and ordinary residence are not always treated identically for every immigration or nationality purpose.

Family Reunification and Family Residence

There is no single immigration procedure covering every family moving to Spain.

The correct route can depend on whether the sponsor is:

  • A Spanish citizen
  • An EU citizen
  • A non-EU Spanish resident
  • A Digital Nomad permit holder
  • A Highly Qualified Professional
  • An entrepreneur
  • A student
  • A long-term resident

Spouses, partners, children, parents and other relatives can therefore face different requirements depending on the sponsor’s status and their relationship.

Start with our Spain Family Reunification Visa guide.

Family strategy should be considered when the principal applicant chooses a visa—not after that visa has already been approved.

Arraigo and Exceptional Residence Routes

People who are already living in Spain and do not have an ordinary qualifying residence status may need a completely different analysis.

Spain’s exceptional-circumstances framework includes several forms of arraigo, including routes connected with social integration, employment, training, family circumstances and previous residence history.

These are not substitutes for planning a suitable visa before moving to Spain.

However, they can be extremely important for people who are already established in the country and meet the applicable requirements.

Read our guide to Arraigo in Spain.

Tourist and Short-Stay Visas

A tourist or Schengen stay is fundamentally different from establishing legal residence in Spain.

Depending on nationality, a visitor may need a Schengen visa or may qualify for visa-free short stays.

Tourist permission should not be treated as a general replacement for a Spanish residence or work authorization.

See our Spain Tourist Visa guide.

Is Spain’s Golden Visa Still Available?

Spain no longer accepts new applications under the former investor-residence or Golden Visa regime.

The program ended for new applicants in 2025.

Buying property in Spain therefore does not automatically create a right to Spanish residence.

Foreign citizens remain free to purchase Spanish real estate, but they need an independent immigration basis if they intend to live in Spain.

Potential alternatives can include the Digital Nomad Visa, Non-Lucrative Visa, employment, self-employment, entrepreneur, family or study routes depending on the applicant’s circumstances.

Digital Nomad Visa or Self-Employed Visa?

This is a common choice for freelancers.

Consider the Digital Nomad route when your professional activity remains primarily international and fits the international remote-work framework.

Consider the Self-Employed route when your business will primarily operate in Spain or provide services to Spanish customers.

Do not base the decision only on which application initially looks easier.

Consider taxation, Social Security, business structure, renewal requirements and the type of clients you expect to have after moving.

Digital Nomad Visa or Non-Lucrative Visa?

The difference is much clearer.

If you intend to continue qualifying remote professional activity, examine the Digital Nomad Visa.

If you have sufficient financial resources and genuinely do not intend to work, examine the Non-Lucrative Visa.

Trying to fit an active remote-working lifestyle into a residence category designed for people who are not working can create problems later.

Work Permit or Highly Qualified Professional Permit?

An ordinary Spanish employment position may fall under the standard work-permit system.

Senior, managerial, specialized or highly qualified positions may qualify for a different residence framework.

The job itself, salary, applicant’s qualifications and employer structure should be examined before choosing the procedure.

What Documents Do Spanish Visa Applicants Usually Need?

Every immigration category has its own requirements.

Depending on the visa, the application may involve documents such as:

  • Passport
  • Application forms
  • Criminal-record certificates
  • Medical certificates
  • Financial evidence
  • Employment contracts
  • Client agreements
  • Company documentation
  • Business plans
  • Educational qualifications
  • Marriage certificates
  • Birth certificates
  • Health-insurance documentation
  • Social Security documents
  • Proof of family relationships

Foreign documents can also require apostilles, legalization or Spanish sworn translations.

Before ordering documents, read our documents needed to move to Spain guide.

Healthcare requirements also vary considerably between immigration categories. See health insurance requirements for Spanish visas before purchasing a policy.

What Happens After Your Spanish Visa Is Approved?

Immigration approval is only one stage of relocating to Spain.

Depending on your situation, you may subsequently need to deal with:

  • NIE
  • TIE residence card
  • Empadronamiento
  • Social Security
  • Healthcare
  • Banking
  • Tax registration
  • Autónomo registration
  • Housing
  • Digital Certificate

An NIE is an identification number and should not automatically be confused with a residence permit.

Read our NIE Number in Spain guide.

Many non-EU residents will also need a physical residence card. See our guide to the TIE Card in Spain.

Think Beyond the Initial Visa

The easiest visa to obtain today is not necessarily the best immigration strategy for the next five or ten years.

Before choosing a route, consider:

  • Can you legally perform your intended work?
  • Can your spouse work?
  • Can children or parents join you?
  • What happens when the permit is renewed?
  • Can you change employers?
  • Can you operate a business?
  • What are the Social Security consequences?
  • Could you become a Spanish tax resident?
  • Does your status support your long-term residence plans?
  • Could qualifying residence eventually contribute toward Spanish citizenship?

If Spain may become your permanent home, review our guide to Spanish citizenship by residence early in the process rather than waiting until several years after your move.

Frequently Asked Questions About Spain Visa Options

What is the best visa for moving to Spain?

There is no single best Spanish visa. The best route is the one that legally matches your nationality, income, employment, family situation and long-term plans.

Which Spanish visa is best for remote workers?

For qualifying non-EU remote employees and international freelancers, the Digital Nomad route is usually the first option to examine.

Which visa is best for retiring in Spain?

The Non-Lucrative Visa is one of the principal routes for non-EU retirees and financially independent applicants who do not intend to work.

Can I move to Spain without a job?

Potentially. Routes such as the Non-Lucrative Visa, family residence and certain study or entrepreneur categories do not depend on obtaining an ordinary Spanish employment contract.

Can I work remotely from Spain on a Non-Lucrative Visa?

The Non-Lucrative route is intended for residence without employment or professional activity. Someone intending to remain professionally active should examine a work-authorized route such as the Digital Nomad Visa.

Does buying property give me Spanish residency?

No. Spain no longer accepts new Golden Visa applications based on property investment. Property ownership and immigration residence are separate matters.

Can my family move to Spain with me?

Many Spanish residence routes provide options for qualifying family members, but eligibility, timing and work rights depend on the principal applicant’s immigration category.

Can a Spanish visa eventually lead to citizenship?

Some qualifying residence statuses can form part of a longer pathway toward Spanish citizenship. The required residence period and other conditions depend on nationality and individual circumstances.

Find the Right Immigration Route Before You Move

Spain offers multiple ways to establish legal residence, but choosing between them should happen before employment contracts, company structures, property decisions or relocation plans are finalized.

Your immigration status should fit your real life—not force you to change your life to fit the visa.

If you are unsure which route applies, contact Newcomer.es for a personalized assessment of your Spain visa and residence options.
