Moving from the UAE to Spain in 2026: Visas, Tax, Documents and Relocation

Moving from the UAE to Spain is possible for UAE citizens and foreign nationals legally resident in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the other Emirates, but a UAE residence visa does not itself provide any right to live in Spain.

For most people, the correct Spanish immigration route depends primarily on passport nationality and what you intend to do in Spain.

Remote employees may qualify for Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa. Financially independent people may consider the Non-Lucrative Visa. Professionals recruited by Spanish companies may qualify for employee or highly qualified residence, while entrepreneurs, students and family members have separate immigration routes.

The move also requires careful planning around UAE document legalization, criminal-record certificates, Spanish tax residence, Social Security, healthcare, banking, housing and post-arrival registration.

Can a UAE Resident Move to Spain?

Yes.

A person legally resident in the UAE can move to Spain when they qualify for an appropriate Spanish residence authorization.

A UAE residence visa can be important because it may prove:

  • legal residence in the UAE;
  • eligibility to apply through the Spanish authorities responsible for the UAE;
  • current employment or business activity;
  • current address;
  • residence history;
  • source of income;
  • previous normal residence for customs purposes.

However:

UAE residence ≠ Spanish residence rights.

Spain assesses your immigration position according to your nationality, professional activity, financial circumstances and the Spanish residence category you are applying for.

UAE Citizen vs UAE Resident: Why the Difference Matters

This is one of the most important points for anyone researching a move from Dubai or Abu Dhabi to Spain.

The UAE has a very large expatriate population.

A person can therefore be:

  • a UAE citizen;
  • an Indian citizen resident in Dubai;
  • a British citizen resident in Abu Dhabi;
  • a Lebanese citizen resident in Dubai;
  • a Canadian citizen resident in the UAE;
  • a Pakistani citizen resident in Sharjah;
  • a South African citizen resident in Dubai.

All may legally reside in the UAE, but they do not necessarily follow identical Spanish immigration rules.

Passport nationality can affect:

  • whether you need a Schengen visa for a short visit;
  • consular requirements;
  • visa fees;
  • criminal-record documents;
  • document legalization;
  • Social Security coordination;
  • citizenship eligibility later;
  • family-document requirements.

Your Emirates ID and UAE residence visa are therefore important supporting documents, but they do not replace your passport-country documentation.

Do UAE Citizens Need a Visa to Visit Spain?

UAE citizens can generally enter Spain for short visa-free visits of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, subject to the normal Schengen entry conditions.

This is for short stays.

It does not give a UAE citizen the right to establish permanent residence or work in Spain.

A UAE citizen planning to live in Spain long term still needs an appropriate Spanish residence route.

What About Foreign Residents of Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

Holding UAE residency does not automatically provide visa-free travel to Spain.

A foreign UAE resident follows the short-stay entry rules applicable to their passport nationality.

For example, two people working for the same company in Dubai may have different requirements for travelling to Spain if they hold different passports.

Which Spain Visa Is Best for UAE Residents?

There is no single “UAE to Spain visa.”

The correct residence route depends on what you will actually do after moving.

SituationPossible Spanish Route
Remote employee for UAE companyDigital Nomad Visa
Remote professional with foreign clientsDigital Nomad Visa
Retired or financially independentNon-Lucrative Visa
Hired by Spanish companyWork Permit
Senior or highly skilled professionalHighly Qualified Professional Permit
Starting traditional businessSelf-Employed Visa
Innovative startup founderEntrepreneur Residence

Studying in SpainStudent Visa
Joining qualifying familyFamily residence

Choosing the correct route is more important than choosing the route that appears easiest to obtain.

Your permit affects work rights, taxation, Social Security, family residence, renewals and your long-term status in Spain.

Spain Digital Nomad Visa for UAE Residents

The Spain Digital Nomad Visa is one of the most relevant routes for professionals moving from Dubai or Abu Dhabi to Spain.

It is designed for qualifying non-EU nationals who perform their work remotely using digital and telecommunications systems.

It can be particularly relevant to:

  • technology professionals;
  • consultants;
  • developers;
  • designers;
  • marketing professionals;
  • finance professionals;
  • remote managers;
  • international executives;
  • remote employees;
  • independent professionals.

Working Remotely for a UAE Company

A UAE-based employee may potentially qualify when the employment relationship and foreign employer meet the international-teleworker requirements.

Applicants generally need evidence showing that:

  • the foreign company is genuinely established and active;
  • the professional relationship has existed for the required period;
  • the employer permits remote work from Spain;
  • the work can genuinely be performed remotely;
  • the applicant has sufficient qualifications or professional experience;
  • the income threshold is satisfied;
  • the Social Security structure is legally compliant.

The employment contract, remote-work authorization and company documentation should all tell the same story.

Digital Nomad Visa Income Requirement in 2026

Spain’s 2026 monthly minimum wage is €1,221.

The principal Digital Nomad applicant must generally demonstrate at least 200% of the monthly SMI, producing a current baseline of:

€2,442 gross per month.

Additional resources are required for accompanying family members.

For the first additional family member, the benchmark is normally another 75% of the SMI.

Each further family member generally adds another 25%.

Because the threshold is linked to Spain’s minimum wage, it should be checked again whenever the SMI changes.

UAE Social Security and the Digital Nomad Visa

This requires particular attention for UAE-based applicants.

Spain and the UAE should not be assumed to have the same Social Security coordination arrangements that Spain has with countries covered by bilateral or multilateral Social Security agreements.

A UAE employment contract, Emirates ID or UAE residence visa does not by itself establish that the employee can remain outside the Spanish Social Security system while working physically from Spain.

Depending on the structure, the foreign employer may need to consider Spanish Social Security registration and compliance.

This is one of the most important parts of a UAE Digital Nomad application to resolve before relocating.

Read our explanation of the Spanish Social Security number and registration system.

Can You Apply for the Digital Nomad Visa From Spain?

In qualifying circumstances, yes.

The international teleworker framework is unusual because a person who is legally present in Spain may potentially submit an application for a residence authorization from within Spain.

This can be attractive to applicants who are legally able to enter Spain without obtaining a short-stay visa.

But this does not mean that every UAE resident can simply travel to Spain and convert tourist status into any type of Spanish residence.

The ability to apply from Spain depends on the specific immigration route.

Non-Lucrative Visa for UAE Residents

The Spain Non-Lucrative Visa is intended for people who want to reside in Spain without undertaking employment or professional activity.

It is commonly considered by:

  • retirees;
  • financially independent applicants;
  • people supported by savings;
  • people with passive investment income;
  • families taking a career break.

It should not be treated as a substitute for the Digital Nomad Visa.

Someone who intends to continue actively working for a Dubai or Abu Dhabi company from Spain should investigate an immigration route that permits that activity.

Non-Lucrative Visa Financial Requirement in 2026

The financial requirement is generally based on 400% of IPREM for the principal applicant.

Using the current €600 monthly IPREM benchmark, the basic requirement is:

€2,400 per month

or

€28,800 for the initial 12-month residence period.

Each accompanying family member generally adds another:

€600 per month

or

€7,200 for 12 months.

A couple would therefore generally need a minimum of €36,000.

Working for a Spanish Company

A UAE resident recruited by a company in Spain may need an appropriate employee residence and work authorization.

Read our Spain Work Permit Visa resource for the standard employee framework.

The employer will normally play a central role in the authorization procedure.

The applicant should not assume that entering Spain as a visitor allows them to begin working immediately.

Highly Qualified Professionals Moving From Dubai or Abu Dhabi

Spain has a separate immigration framework for certain highly qualified professionals.

It can be particularly relevant to UAE-based:

  • senior managers;
  • executives;
  • engineers;
  • financial professionals;
  • technology specialists;
  • researchers;
  • scientific professionals;
  • specialist consultants.

Read our Spain Highly Qualified Professional Visa explanation if you have received a senior or specialized job offer in Spain.

For multinational employees, an intra-company transfer may also be worth examining when the UAE and Spanish entities belong to the same corporate group.

Starting a Business in Spain

There are two important routes that should not be confused.

Traditional Business or Self-Employment

A person who wants to establish a conventional business, consultancy or professional activity may consider the Spain Self-Employed Visa — Cuenta Propia.

The application can involve evidence concerning:

  • business viability;
  • financing;
  • investment;
  • qualifications;
  • professional experience;
  • licences;
  • projected revenue.

Innovative Startup

A genuinely innovative or scalable project may potentially qualify under Spain’s international entrepreneur framework.

Read our Spain Entrepreneur Visa resource for the requirements applying to innovative projects.

A normal restaurant, consulting practice, shop or service company should not automatically be described as an entrepreneur-visa project simply because a new company is being established.

Studying in Spain From the UAE

Students admitted to qualifying Spanish educational programmes may need a study authorization depending on the duration and circumstances.

This can apply to university education, postgraduate programmes, vocational training and other qualifying studies.

Read the Spain Student Visa article before preparing the application.

Moving to Spain With Family

Family immigration rules depend on the status of the person already living or moving to Spain.

Possible routes differ depending on whether the sponsor is:

  • a Spanish citizen;
  • an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen;
  • a Digital Nomad resident;
  • a Highly Qualified Professional;
  • another Spanish resident;
  • another qualifying family sponsor.

For the ordinary family reunification framework, see Family Reunification in Spain.

Do not choose a family immigration form solely based on the existence of a marriage certificate. The sponsor’s immigration status determines the appropriate procedure.

Documents Needed When Moving From the UAE to Spain

Document preparation is one of the most important parts of a UAE-to-Spain relocation.

Depending on the residence route, applicants may need:

  • passports;
  • UAE residence visas;
  • Emirates IDs;
  • criminal-record certificates;
  • birth certificates;
  • marriage certificates;
  • educational qualifications;
  • employment contracts;
  • company documentation;
  • bank statements;
  • health-insurance certificates;
  • medical certificates;
  • proof of accommodation;
  • financial evidence.

Review the complete documents needed to move to Spain before ordering time-sensitive certificates.

Do UAE Documents Need an Apostille?

Generally, UAE-issued public documents used in Spain follow a legalization process rather than the Hague Apostille procedure.

This is particularly relevant because many applicants mistakenly search for a UAE apostille.

Depending on the document and procedure, the legalization chain can involve authentication through the appropriate UAE authorities and subsequent legalization for use before Spanish authorities.

Do not assume that a document issued in Dubai or Abu Dhabi is ready for a Spanish visa simply because it is an original document.

Documents Issued in Other Countries

Many UAE residents were born, married or educated outside the Emirates.

A document issued in another country follows the authentication rules applicable to the country that issued the document.

For example, a Canadian birth certificate held by a Canadian resident of Dubai remains a Canadian-issued document.

Likewise, an Indian marriage certificate remains an Indian-issued public document.

Do not attempt to apply UAE legalization rules automatically to every document simply because you now live in the UAE.

Spanish Sworn Translations

Foreign documents submitted in Spain may also need an official Spanish translation.

Authentication and translation are separate processes.

A legalized document is not automatically translated, and a translated document is not automatically authenticated.

See Translation Services in Spain for information about sworn Spanish translations.

Criminal Record Certificates for UAE Residents

Long-term UAE residents should pay particular attention to criminal-record documentation.

Many Spanish residence applications require evidence covering relevant countries of residence during a specified previous period.

A UAE Police Clearance Certificate may therefore be required.

Depending on the immigration route and residence history, certificates may also be needed from:

  • the applicant’s country of nationality;
  • previous countries of residence;
  • other countries in which the applicant lived during the relevant period.

The required look-back period is not identical for every Spanish visa.

Do not use one universal criminal-record checklist for Digital Nomad, Non-Lucrative, work and student applications.

NIE Number After Moving to Spain

The NIE — Número de Identificación de Extranjero — is your Spanish foreigner identification number.

It is frequently used for:

  • immigration;
  • taxes;
  • banking;
  • employment;
  • Social Security;
  • property transactions;
  • vehicles;
  • business activities.

An NIE does not by itself give you permission to reside in Spain.

Read NIE Number in Spain for the full procedure.

TIE Residence Card

The TIE is different from the NIE.

The Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero is the physical residence card issued to many non-EU residents.

It normally contains your photograph, immigration status and NIE.

Read our TIE Card Spain resource for the fingerprint and card process.

Empadronamiento

After establishing your real home in Spain, registering with the municipality is another important administrative step.

This is known as empadronamiento.

Padrón registration can become relevant for immigration, healthcare, schools and various municipal procedures.

See Empadronamiento in Spain.

Healthcare After Moving From the UAE

Spain’s healthcare structure is very different from the UAE model.

Your access to public healthcare depends on your circumstances.

Possible routes can include:

  • Spanish employment;
  • Spanish self-employment;
  • qualifying Social Security coverage;
  • private insurance;
  • another legally recognized healthcare entitlement.

Visa applicants who require private insurance should verify that the policy satisfies immigration requirements rather than assuming that a general international medical policy will be accepted.

Read our overview of healthcare in Spain for newcomers.

Spanish Tax Residence After Living in the UAE

Taxation is one of the biggest differences between the UAE and Spain.

A person can become Spanish tax resident under Spanish domestic tax rules even when they continue receiving salary, dividends or investment income from the UAE.

The best-known test is spending more than 183 days in Spain during a calendar year, but it is not the only factor.

Spain can also examine the location of a person’s principal economic interests, and family circumstances can be relevant.

A Spanish tax resident can generally become subject to Spanish taxation on worldwide income.

This makes pre-move tax planning particularly important for UAE residents with:

  • employment income;
  • investment portfolios;
  • UAE companies;
  • property;
  • dividends;
  • cryptocurrency;
  • international businesses;
  • substantial savings.

Spain and the UAE Have a Double-Taxation Treaty

Spain and the United Arab Emirates have a double-taxation convention covering income and wealth taxation.

The treaty can help determine how particular categories of income should be treated when the two countries are involved.

However:

A double-tax treaty does not mean UAE income becomes tax-free in Spain.

This distinction is particularly important because ordinary employment income may have faced little or no personal income tax in the UAE before the move.

A person who becomes Spanish tax resident cannot simply assume that income remains outside the Spanish system because it continues arriving in a UAE bank account.

Beckham Law for People Moving From the UAE

Some professionals moving to Spain may qualify for Spain’s special inbound taxpayer regime, commonly called the Beckham Law.

The regime and the immigration permit are separate.

Obtaining a Digital Nomad Visa does not automatically place you under the Beckham Law.

Potential eligibility can depend on matters such as:

  • previous Spanish tax residence;
  • reason for relocating;
  • employment status;
  • remote-working structure;
  • company directorship;
  • entrepreneurial activity;
  • professional activity;
  • application deadlines.

Tax planning should ideally take place before changing employment arrangements or relocating.

UAE Company Owners Moving to Spain

Someone who owns or manages a UAE company while living in Spain should take particular care.

The company may remain incorporated in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or a UAE free zone, but incorporation location is not the only tax question.

Moving company management activity to Spain can create issues involving:

  • personal taxation;
  • dividends;
  • salary;
  • permanent establishment;
  • effective management;
  • corporate taxation;
  • VAT;
  • transfer pricing;
  • Social Security.

Do not assume that maintaining a UAE free-zone company automatically keeps all business activity outside Spanish taxation.

Opening a Spanish Bank Account

A Spanish bank account can simplify everyday life after moving.

It is commonly useful for:

  • rent;
  • utilities;
  • salary;
  • taxes;
  • insurance;
  • Social Security;
  • mortgages;
  • direct debits;
  • Bizum.

Read How to Open a Bank Account in Spain as a Foreigner.

Transferring Money From the UAE to Spain

Many people relocating from Dubai or Abu Dhabi arrive with substantial savings or proceeds from:

  • employment;
  • investments;
  • company ownership;
  • property sales;
  • bonuses;
  • cryptocurrency;
  • inheritance.

Spanish banks may request evidence explaining how the money was accumulated.

This does not mean there is a universal amount above which every transfer is automatically blocked.

The central issue is traceability and source of funds.

Prepare supporting records before sending a large transfer.

Our detailed article on bringing cash and transferring money to Spain explains how to prepare a source-of-funds file.

Moving Household Goods From Dubai or Abu Dhabi to Spain

Goods arriving from the UAE enter the European Union from a third country.

A genuine transfer of normal residence can potentially qualify for customs and import-tax relief when the legal requirements are satisfied.

Important issues can include:

  • how long you lived outside the EU;
  • how long you owned and used the belongings;
  • when the goods are imported;
  • whether they remain for personal use;
  • evidence of your move to Spain.

Useful evidence of previous UAE residence can include Emirates ID records, tenancy documentation, employment records and other documents demonstrating that the UAE was genuinely your normal place of residence.

Bringing a UAE Car to Spain

Importing a UAE-specification vehicle requires more than customs clearance.

The car may also need to satisfy Spanish and European technical requirements involving:

  • homologation;
  • ITV;
  • emissions;
  • lighting;
  • technical conformity;
  • insurance;
  • registration;
  • taxes;
  • Spanish licence plates.

A vehicle qualifying for customs relief is not automatically guaranteed Spanish registration.

For many standard Gulf-specification cars, selling the vehicle in the UAE and purchasing another vehicle in Spain can be simpler.

For expensive, unusual or European-specification vehicles, importation may make more sense.

Calculate the full cost before shipping.

Can You Exchange a UAE Driving Licence in Spain?

This is an important issue that the previous version of this page did not address.

Spain does not currently list the United Arab Emirates among the countries covered by its ordinary bilateral driving-licence exchange system.

A qualifying foreign licence can generally remain valid temporarily after a person establishes normal residence in Spain, subject to Spain’s rules for third-country licences.

The maximum period is generally six months after acquiring normal residence in Spain.

After the licence ceases to be valid for driving in Spain, a resident whose country does not have an exchange agreement may need to obtain a Spanish driving licence through the normal Spanish licensing process.

Do not wait until the six-month period is about to expire before investigating your situation.

Also remember that the rules concern the country that issued your driving licence, not simply the country where you previously lived.

An expatriate moving from Dubai with a British, Canadian or another country’s driving licence may therefore have different options from someone holding a UAE-issued licence.

Finding a Home in Spain After Living in the UAE

Housing can feel very different from Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

People accustomed to newer UAE developments should pay particular attention to:

  • air conditioning;
  • heating;
  • insulation;
  • humidity;
  • lift access;
  • parking;
  • building age;
  • storage;
  • internet;
  • community charges;
  • distance to schools;
  • proximity to hospitals.

Foreign income may be acceptable to Spanish landlords, but applicants without Spanish payroll history may be asked for additional financial evidence.

Essential Steps After Arriving in Spain

The precise order depends on your immigration authorization, but the settlement process commonly includes:

  1. Enter Spain under the correct visa or residence authorization.
  2. Establish suitable accommodation.
  3. Complete empadronamiento.
  4. Obtain your TIE where required.
  5. Confirm your NIE.
  6. Complete employment or autónomo registration when applicable.
  7. Obtain a Social Security number when required.
  8. Establish healthcare coverage.
  9. Open or update your Spanish bank account.
  10. Organize tax registration and reporting.
  11. Obtain a Digital Certificate.
  12. Deal with driving-licence and vehicle procedures.
  13. Review your longer-term residence strategy.

Not every newcomer should complete these steps in exactly the same sequence.

Your immigration authorization determines the correct order.

Can UAE Residents Get Permanent Residence in Spain?

Potentially, yes.

A person who maintains qualifying legal and continuous residence in Spain may eventually become eligible for Spanish long-term residence.

Five years is an important benchmark for many long-term residence routes, although continuity and other requirements must be satisfied.

Read Permanent Residency in Spain if Spain is intended to become your long-term home.

Can UAE Citizens Get Spanish Citizenship?

Potentially, yes.

Spanish citizenship is separate from immigration residence.

For UAE nationals, the standard citizenship-by-residence period is generally 10 years of qualifying legal residence, unless the individual qualifies for one of Spain’s statutory reduced residence periods because of their personal circumstances.

A person’s residence in Dubai or Abu Dhabi before moving to Spain does not count toward Spanish citizenship residence.

Nationality is also particularly important for the citizenship timeline because many UAE expatriates hold passports from countries whose citizens may have different Spanish nationality rules.

Common Mistakes When Moving From the UAE to Spain

Assuming Emirates ID Gives Spanish Immigration Rights

It does not.

Assuming Every Dubai Resident Has the Same Spanish Visa Rules

Passport nationality matters.

Using the Non-Lucrative Visa for Remote Work

The NLV is not a remote-work authorization.

Treating UAE Social Security as Automatically Sufficient

A UAE employment arrangement does not automatically prove Spanish Social Security compliance.

Requesting an Apostille for Every UAE Document

UAE-issued documents generally follow the appropriate legalization process for use in Spain.

Assuming UAE Income Remains Tax-Free After Moving

Spanish tax residence can fundamentally change the result.

Keeping a UAE Company Without Reviewing Spanish Tax Exposure

Foreign incorporation does not prevent Spanish tax consequences.

Sending Large Transfers Without a Paper Trail

Prepare source-of-funds documentation before transferring substantial money.

Shipping a Gulf-Specification Vehicle Without Checking Homologation

Customs relief does not guarantee Spanish vehicle registration.

Assuming a UAE Driving Licence Can Simply Be Exchanged

The UAE is not currently part of Spain’s ordinary bilateral exchange list.

Frequently Asked Questions About Moving From the UAE to Spain

Can a UAE resident move permanently to Spain?

Yes, if they qualify for an appropriate Spanish residence authorization.

Does Emirates ID give me the right to live in Spain?

No. Emirates ID proves UAE status, not Spanish immigration rights.

Can UAE citizens visit Spain without a Schengen visa?

Generally, yes, for qualifying short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Long-term residence requires a separate immigration route.

Does UAE residency make every nationality visa-free for Spain?

No. Foreign UAE residents follow the short-stay requirements applicable to their passport nationality.

What is the best Spain visa for someone working remotely from Dubai?

For a qualifying remote employee or professional, the Digital Nomad Visa may be the most relevant route.

How much income is required for the Digital Nomad Visa in 2026?

The principal-applicant threshold is currently €2,442 gross per month.

Can I keep working for my Dubai employer from Spain?

Potentially, when your immigration and Social Security structure complies with Spain’s international-teleworker requirements.

Can I use the Non-Lucrative Visa while working remotely?

No. Someone intending to continue professional activity should investigate an authorization that permits the work.

How much money is required for the Non-Lucrative Visa?

The 2026 baseline is generally €28,800 for the principal applicant, plus €7,200 for each accompanying dependant for the first year.

Do UAE documents need an apostille?

UAE-issued public documents generally require the applicable legalization procedure rather than a Hague Apostille for use in Spain.

Does Spain have a tax treaty with the UAE?

Yes. Spain and the UAE have a double-taxation convention.

Will my Dubai salary be tax-free after I move to Spain?

Not necessarily. Becoming Spanish tax resident can make worldwide income subject to Spanish taxation, subject to applicable Spanish law and treaty provisions.

Can Digital Nomad Visa holders use the Beckham Law?

Some may qualify, but the immigration authorization does not automatically grant the special tax regime.

Can I exchange my UAE driving licence for a Spanish licence?

Spain does not currently list the UAE among its ordinary driving-licence exchange-agreement countries.

Can I bring my UAE car to Spain?

Yes, potentially, but customs, homologation, ITV, taxation and registration should be investigated before shipping the vehicle.

Can I transfer my savings from Dubai to Spain?

Yes. Spanish banks may request documentation proving ownership and the lawful source of the funds.
