United Arab Emirates

Moving from the UAE to Spain as a non-citizen involves a transition that depends entirely on your passport nationality rather than your UAE residency status. Since you are a non-EU citizen, you must secure the correct long-stay visa before you leave the UAE.

Here is the essential information to help you navigate the process.

1. The Golden Rule: Nationality Matters

Your UAE residence visa does not grant you special status for moving to Spain. You will be treated as a “third-country national” based on the passport you hold.

  • Check your eligibility: Regardless of your long-term life in the UAE, you must apply for a national (Type D) visa at the Spanish consulate in the UAE (Abu Dhabi or Dubai) before you move.

2. Popular Visa Pathways

Most non-EU expats moving from the UAE choose one of these two primary routes:

  • Digital Nomad Visa (DNV): This is the top choice for remote professionals. It allows you to live in Spain while working for companies or clients based outside of Spain.

    • Key Requirements: Proof of remote work (minimum 3 months with current employer/client), a monthly income of approximately €2,646 (for a single applicant), and a clean criminal record.

  • Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV): Best suited for retirees or individuals with significant passive income (savings, investments, or pensions) who do not intend to work while in Spain.

    • Key Requirements: Proof of sufficient financial means to support yourself without working.

3. Essential Pre-Departure Tasks

Bureaucracy is the biggest hurdle. Treat these as non-negotiable steps:

  • Baja Consular: This is a certificate of de-registration from your home country’s embassy or consulate in the UAE. It is essential if you want to import your household goods into Spain tax-free under the “Transfer of Residence” scheme.

  • NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero): You cannot conduct meaningful financial or legal business in Spain without this identification number. You can apply for this at the Spanish consulate in the UAE before you move.

  • Criminal Record Check: You will need a clean criminal record certificate from every country you have lived in for the past 5 years. This must be apostilled/legalized to be valid in Spain.

  • Private Health Insurance: For almost all residency visas, you are required to hold comprehensive private health insurance with a Spanish provider.

4. Financial & Tax Planning

Moving from a 0% personal income tax environment like the UAE to Spain’s progressive tax system is a significant shift.

  • The Beckham Law: This is a special tax regime that can be a “game changer” for some expats. If you qualify (often through the Digital Nomad Visa), you may be taxed as a non-resident for up to six years, potentially saving you significant amounts on your worldwide income. Consult an international tax advisor to see if you qualify before you arrive.

  • Double Taxation: There is currently no comprehensive tax treaty between the UAE and Spain to automatically prevent double taxation. You will likely be considered a tax resident in Spain if you spend more than 183 days there in a calendar year, making your worldwide income subject to Spanish tax.

5. Practical Logistics

  • Household Goods: Do not pack your container yourself. Use a professional international mover who understands the “Transfer of Residence” exemption; otherwise, you may be hit with heavy import duties and VAT (approx. 21%).

  • Cars: It is generally advised to sell your car in the UAE. Converting a non-EU spec vehicle to meet EU standards is often prohibitively expensive and bureaucratic.

  • Appointments: Visa appointments at the Spanish consulate in the UAE are highly sought after. Book them as early as possible through the official channels.

Next Steps:

  1. Identify your visa: Decide if you will work remotely (Digital Nomad) or live off savings (Non-Lucrative).

  2. Contact the Consulate: Check the official website of the Spanish consulate in the UAE to confirm the current document checklist for your specific passport.

  3. Consult a Professional: Given the tax implications of moving from the UAE to Spain, it is highly recommended to hire an immigration lawyer or tax specialist who understands the cross-border specifics between these two regions.
