United Kingdom

Moving from the UK to Spain has become more complex since Brexit, as British citizens are now treated as “third-country nationals.” However, thousands of British citizens successfully make the move every year by following the necessary administrative pathways.

1. Residency and Visas

You no longer have an automatic right to live in Spain. For stays longer than 90 days in any 180-day period, you must obtain a residency visa before moving.

  • Common Visa Routes:

    • Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV): Best for retirees or those with sufficient passive income (savings, pensions, investments) who do not intend to work in Spain. You must generally prove an income of at least €28,800 per year (for a single applicant).

    • Digital Nomad Visa: Designed for remote workers employed by companies outside of Spain. This requires proof of professional qualifications and a minimum income (approximately €2,850 per month in 2026).

  • The NIE: The Número de Identificación de Extranjero (Foreigner’s Identity Number) is your essential tax and administrative ID. You will need it for everything from opening a bank account to signing a rental contract.

  • Registration: Once you arrive, you must register at your local town hall (empadronamiento) within 30 days and apply for your residency card (TIE) at a local police station.

2. Healthcare

UK residents generally lose access to free NHS care when they move to Spain.

  • Private Insurance: Most visa applicants are required to hold comprehensive private health insurance with no co-payments and full coverage.

  • Public Healthcare Options:

    • S1 Form: If you are a UK state pensioner, you may be eligible for an S1 form, which allows you to access the Spanish public health system funded by the UK government.

    • Convenio Especial: After one year of legal residence, you may be able to “buy into” the Spanish public system for a monthly fee (approx. €60/month).

    • Social Security: If you are employed or self-employed (autónomo) in Spain, you will contribute to the social security system, which grants you full access to public healthcare.

3. Driving in Spain

The UK and Spain have a bilateral agreement that allows for the exchange of driving licenses.

  • The 6-Month Rule: Once you become a legal resident, you have 6 months to exchange your UK license for a Spanish one.

  • The Process: Do not miss this deadline. If you fail to exchange your license within the 6-month window, you will have to take both the Spanish theory and practical driving tests from scratch.

  • Driving Requirements: While driving in Spain, you must carry your full valid UK license. From 2026, new regulations require a V-16 emergency beacon instead of traditional warning triangles.

4. Tax Obligations

Spain and the UK have a Double Taxation Treaty, but you must be proactive in managing your tax status to avoid complications.

  • Tax Residency: You are generally considered a tax resident if you spend more than 183 days per year in Spain. As a tax resident, you must declare your worldwide income to Spanish authorities.

  • Reporting Assets: Spain has specific reporting requirements, such as the Modelo 720 form, for assets held outside of Spain (including bank accounts, investments, and property) if they exceed certain thresholds.

  • Pensions: Private UK pensions are generally taxed in Spain, while government service pensions are usually taxed in the UK. Always consult a tax professional specializing in UK-Spain cross-border matters before you move.

5. Moving Your Belongings

  • Transfer of Residence: To avoid paying VAT on your personal household goods, you must complete a “Transfer of Residence” declaration with UK customs.

  • Inventory: It is highly recommended to provide a detailed inventory list of your belongings for customs clearance. New items or high-value goods may still be subject to VAT.
