How to Check Your Legal Status in Spain

The Spanish government centralizes its citizen data through a system called Carpeta Ciudadana. You can access it through two methods:

• Via Web Browser: Go directly to the official portal: carpetaciudadana.gob.es/carpeta/mcc/residencia-legal
• Via Mobile App: Download the official Mi Carpeta Ciudadana application, which is available on both iOS and Android.

The Verification Step-by-Step

1.Log In with Your Digital Signature:

Open the app or web portal and authenticate using your Certificado Digital or Cl@ve Pin/Permanente.

2.Navigate to Personal Situation:

From the main dashboard, click on the Mi Carpeta overview tab and locate the Situación Personal (Personal Situation) section.

3.Open the Residency Panel:

Click on Residencia Legal (Legal Residency). This specific module pulls real-time data directly from the Ministry of Spain’s immigration databases.

Once you open the Residencia Legal screen, look carefully at the text displayed:

• 🟢 Active/Valid Status: If everything is running smoothly, the screen will display your current residency type, your NIE, and an active expiration date.
• 🔴 Revoked/Annulled Status: If your visa has been formally revoked, the system will typically reflect this change immediately. Your status may show as inactive, archived (archivado), or revoked (extinguido/revocado).
• ❓ Missing or Incomplete Data: If the information is completely missing, shows a processing error, or looks incorrect, do not ignore it. In the current auditing climate, missing data can indicate that an administrative investigation or a missed notification (notificación electrónica) is pending against your file.
