Spain Long-Term Residence Eligibility & Timeline Calculator

SPAIN LONG-TERM RESIDENCE

Check your long-term residence timeline

See when you may qualify for long-term residence in Spain and whether your time outside Spain could affect your eligibility.

1. Which long-term residence route are you checking?

National and EU long-term residence both normally use a 5-year residence period, but some requirements are different.

2. Your legal residence in Spain

Enter the date your legal residence began for this long-term residence calculation. Do not automatically use your arrival date, padrón date or TIE issue date.

If you are not sure which date counts, choose Not sure. Your result will be marked for review instead of showing a potentially incorrect eligibility date.

3. Time spent outside Spain

Enter your approximate time outside Spain during the relevant 5-year period. Our next Residence Absence & Continuity Calculator will be able to calculate this from travel dates.

Enter the longest continuous period you spent outside Spain during the relevant 5-year period. Use months, for example 2 or 3.5.

Add together all your absences from Spain during the relevant 5-year period. Enter the total in months.

Some work-related absences can have a different total limit. Choose Partly / not sure if your situation is mixed or unclear.

Choose Yes or Not sure if an absence involved force majeure, qualifying cooperation work abroad or another unusual situation that may need individual review.

4. Could a special long-term residence category apply?

Some people can qualify through a special legal route instead of the standard 5-year calculation. Choose Not sure if you think one may apply but you are uncertain.

4. Extra checks for EU Long-Term Residence

Some qualifying study, training, volunteering or pupil-mobility periods may count at 50% for EU long-term residence.

EU long-term residence has an additional requirement for stable and regular resources.

EU long-term residence also requires qualifying health coverage.

Cross-border EU residence histories and protection cases use additional rules and may need an individual review.

      What this result means

      This calculator checks your residence timeline and the information you entered about absences. It does not guarantee approval of a long-term residence application. Other legal and documentary requirements may also apply.

      How to Use the Spain Long-Term Residence Calculator

      Use this calculator to estimate when you may qualify for long-term residence in Spain, how much of the standard five-year residence period you have completed and whether your time outside Spain could affect your eligibility.

      The calculator can check two different routes:

      • National Long-Term Residence
      • EU Long-Term Residence

      Although both routes normally use a five-year residence period, their requirements are not identical.

      Step 1: Choose the Long-Term Residence Route

      Select the route you want to check.

      National Long-Term Residence is Spain’s national indefinite residence status.

      EU Long-Term Residence also provides long-term status but operates under the EU long-term resident framework and includes additional requirements.

      If you are not sure which route is more appropriate, you can calculate both and compare the results.

      Step 2: Enter When Your Qualifying Legal Residence Began

      Enter the date your qualifying legal residence in Spain started.

      Do not automatically enter:

      • your first arrival date;
      • padrón registration date;
      • NIE date;
      • date your physical TIE was issued;
      • first rental-contract date.

      The relevant calculation is based on qualifying legal residence.

      If you are unsure which date counts, choose Not sure when asked whether the start date is correct.

      The calculator will then return REVIEW REQUIRED rather than provide a potentially misleading eligibility date.

      Step 3: Enter Your Time Outside Spain

      The calculator asks for:

      Longest single absence from Spain (months)

      and:

      Total time outside Spain (months)

      For the first field, enter the longest continuous period you spent outside Spain.

      For the second, add together all relevant absences during the five-year period.

      Example:

      You were outside Spain for:

      • 2 months;
      • 1 month;
      • 3 months.

      Your:

      Longest single absence = 3 months

      and:

      Total time outside Spain = 6 months

      Step 4: Tell Us Whether the Absences Were Mainly for Work

      Some qualifying work-related absences have a different cumulative limit.

      If the trips were primarily connected with employment or professional activity, select the appropriate answer.

      If your history contains a mixture of work and personal travel and you are unsure how it should be classified, choose Not sure.

      Step 5: Tell Us About Exceptional Absences

      If an absence involved force majeure or another exceptional situation, tell the calculator.

      These circumstances should not be automatically accepted or rejected by a simple date calculation.

      The result may therefore show REVIEW REQUIRED.

      Step 6: Check Whether a Special National Route Applies

      National long-term residence is not limited to the standard five-year route.

      Some people can potentially qualify through specific statutory circumstances.

      The calculator allows you to indicate situations such as:

      • qualifying Spanish contributory retirement pension;
      • qualifying permanent-disability pension;
      • certain people born in Spain;
      • former Spaniards by origin;
      • certain applicants previously under a Spanish public authority’s guardianship;
      • qualifying refugee, stateless or subsidiary-protection status;
      • other exceptional statutory circumstances.

      A match does not automatically mean approval.

      The calculator will normally show POSSIBLE SPECIAL ROUTE so the circumstances can be verified.

      Step 7: Complete the Additional EU Questions

      If you choose EU Long-Term Residence, the calculator may ask additional questions.

      These can include:

      • periods in Spain under qualifying study or training stays;
      • whether you currently hold residence status in Spain;
      • whether you have regular financial resources;
      • whether you have qualifying health insurance;
      • whether your history involves an EU Blue Card or cross-border EU mobility.

      These questions matter because EU long-term residence has additional requirements beyond simply completing five years.

      Step 8: Check Your Timeline

      Click:

      Check my long-term residence timeline

      Your result can show:

      StatusMeaning
      ON TRACKYour current five-year timeline appears to be progressing normally
      ELIGIBLE BY TIMEYou appear to have completed the required residence period
      ABSENCE RISKYour reported time outside Spain may affect continuity
      POSSIBLE SPECIAL ROUTEYou may have a separate statutory route to national long-term residence
      REVIEW REQUIREDYour circumstances cannot safely be determined by the automated calculation alone

      ELIGIBLE BY TIME does not mean the application is automatically approved.

      It means the residence-period calculation appears to have been completed.

      What Is Long-Term Residence in Spain?

      Long-term residence is an immigration status designed for qualifying foreign nationals who have established a sufficiently long and continuous period of legal residence.

      Unlike a normal temporary residence permit, long-term residence can provide the right to reside and work in Spain indefinitely, subject to the applicable rules.

      For many foreign residents, it is one of the most important milestones after the initial visa and temporary-residence stages.

      A typical immigration journey may look like:

      Initial residence → renewals → five years of qualifying residence → long-term residence → possible Spanish citizenship later

      That is why long-term residence should be planned well before the fifth year.

      How Many Years Do You Need for Long-Term Residence in Spain?

      For the standard route, the central requirement is generally:

      5 years of legal and continuous residence in Spain.

      This applies to both the normal National Long-Term Residence calculation and the standard EU Long-Term Residence calculation, although EU status has additional requirements.

      Example

      Qualifying legal residence begins:

      15 October 2023

      Five-year residence milestone:

      15 October 2028

      If the applicant remains within the applicable continuity requirements, the calculator will progressively move toward that date.

      What Does the Progress Percentage Mean?

      The progress bar compares the qualifying residence period already completed with the normal five-year requirement.

      Example:

      Qualifying residence completed:

      3 years and 9 months

      Required period:

      5 years

      The calculator may show approximately:

      75% complete

      This is useful for long-term planning, but it is not an approval probability.

      It simply shows progress toward the residence-period milestone.

      How Long Can You Stay Outside Spain Before Long-Term Residence?

      This is one of the most important parts of long-term-residence planning.

      For the standard national five-year route, continuity is generally preserved where an absence does not exceed:

      6 continuous months

      and the total absences during the relevant five years do not exceed:

      10 months in total.

      Where qualifying absences are for work-related reasons, the cumulative limit can reach:

      18 months during the five-year period.

      The six-month continuous-absence limit still matters.

      Example

      During your five-year period you spent:

      • 3 months abroad in year 1;
      • 2 months abroad in year 3;
      • 4 months abroad in year 4.

      Total:

      9 months

      Longest continuous absence:

      4 months

      On the standard numerical limits alone, this would remain below both the six-month single-absence limit and the ten-month cumulative limit.

      The calculator checks both figures separately.

      Why Does the Calculator Ask for the Longest Absence and Total Absences?

      Because these are two different tests.

      Imagine two applicants.

      Applicant A

      One absence:

      7 months continuously

      Total absences:

      7 months

      The total is below 10 months, but the single continuous absence exceeds six months.

      Applicant B

      Five separate absences:

      2 months each

      Total:

      10 months

      No single absence is longer than two months, but the cumulative total has reached the standard limit.

      That is why the calculator needs both numbers.

      What If My Absences Were for Work?

      Work-related absences can receive different treatment for the cumulative limit.

      For qualifying work-related travel, the five-year cumulative limit can be higher than the ordinary limit.

      However, selecting work-related should not be treated as a way to automatically disregard travel.

      The nature and evidence of those absences can matter.

      If your work history is complicated, or only part of your travel was professional, use Not sure and review the case individually.

      What If I Had to Leave Spain Because of an Exceptional Situation?

      Some exceptional absences can require individual treatment.

      For example, a properly justified force-majeure situation should not simply be treated the same way as ordinary travel.

      That is why Newcomer does not automatically mark every exceptional absence as:

      PASS

      or:

      FAIL

      Instead, the calculator can return:

      REVIEW REQUIRED

      This is intentionally safer than pretending that every unusual absence can be decided by a basic number of months.

      National Long-Term Residence vs EU Long-Term Residence

      Spain has two important long-term residence concepts:

      National Long-Term Residence

      This is Spain’s national long-term residence authorization.

      The standard route is based on five years of qualifying legal and continuous residence in Spain.

      It can provide indefinite residence and work rights in Spain.

      EU Long-Term Residence

      EU Long-Term Residence also gives indefinite residence and work rights in Spain but additionally connects the holder with the EU long-term resident framework.

      It has extra eligibility requirements.

      For example, the applicant normally needs:

      • qualifying five-year residence;
      • sufficient fixed and regular resources;
      • health insurance.

      Certain periods of study or training can also receive specific treatment.

      Does Study Time Count Toward EU Long-Term Residence?

      In some circumstances, yes — partially.

      For EU Long-Term Residence, certain periods spent in Spain under qualifying:

      • study;
      • pupil mobility;
      • volunteering;
      • training activities

      can be counted at:

      50% of their duration

      provided the applicable conditions are satisfied.

      One important condition is that the person must be in residence status in Spain when applying for EU Long-Term Residence.

      Example

      Suppose a person has:

      1 year of qualifying study stay

      and later:

      4 years and 6 months of qualifying residence

      If the study period qualifies for 50% credit:

      1 year study × 50% = 6 months credited

      4 years 6 months residence + 6 months credit = 5 years

      However, this type of calculation should be reviewed carefully.

      For that reason, more complicated study histories may produce REVIEW REQUIRED in the calculator rather than an automatic approval-style result.

      Does Study Time Count the Same Way for National Long-Term Residence?

      No automatic 50% rule should be transferred from the EU route to the standard National Long-Term Residence calculation.

      This is exactly why Newcomer keeps the National and EU calculations separate.

      A rule applying to EU long-term residence should not silently be reused for national long-term residence.

      Does EU Long-Term Residence Require Income?

      Yes.

      Unlike the standard national five-year calculation, EU Long-Term Residence includes an additional requirement for fixed and regular resources sufficient for the applicant and, where applicable, family members.

      These resources may come from qualifying employment, professional activity or other permitted sources.

      Completing five years alone therefore does not necessarily mean that every EU Long-Term Residence requirement is satisfied.

      If the residence period is complete but the resources requirement is uncertain, the calculator should not simply say that the entire application is eligible.

      Is Health Insurance Required for EU Long-Term Residence?

      EU Long-Term Residence also includes a health-insurance requirement.

      This is another reason the calculator distinguishes between:

      ELIGIBLE BY TIME

      and:

      fully eligible for approval.

      A person may have completed five years but still need to verify additional requirements before applying.

      What About EU Blue Card Holders?

      EU Blue Card mobility can involve a more complex residence calculation where qualifying periods in different EU Member States may be relevant.

      This can involve:

      • residence in another EU country;
      • EU Blue Card periods;
      • highly qualified employment;
      • research status;
      • certain study or training periods;
      • specific residence immediately before applying in Spain;
      • separate absence limits.

      Newcomer therefore sends complex Blue Card mobility histories to:

      REVIEW REQUIRED

      rather than forcing them into the ordinary Spanish five-year formula.

      Can You Qualify for National Long-Term Residence Without Waiting Five Years?

      In certain statutory situations, potentially yes.

      Spanish rules contain special grounds that are separate from the ordinary five-year route.

      Examples can involve certain:

      • Spanish contributory retirement pension beneficiaries;
      • qualifying permanent-disability pension beneficiaries;
      • people born in Spain who satisfy specific residence conditions;
      • former Spaniards by origin;
      • people who were under qualifying Spanish public guardianship;
      • recognized refugees, stateless persons or beneficiaries of subsidiary protection;
      • exceptional cases involving a notable contribution to Spain.

      These are not all simple checkbox rules.

      Documentation and individual legal requirements can be important.

      That is why the calculator uses:

      POSSIBLE SPECIAL ROUTE

      rather than automatically declaring:

      ELIGIBLE.

      Example: Born in Spain

      One special national long-term residence category can apply to a qualifying resident who:

      • was born in Spain;
      • has reached adulthood;
      • has completed the required period of legal and continuous residence immediately before the application.

      This is different from the normal five-year calculation.

      If this appears relevant, the calculator identifies a possible special route rather than forcing the applicant to continue using the standard five-year countdown.

      Example: Former Spanish Citizen by Origin

      A foreign national who was originally Spanish and later lost Spanish nationality can potentially fall under a special national long-term residence route.

      This is very different from simply having Spanish ancestry.

      The legal condition relates specifically to someone who was Spanish by origin and subsequently lost Spanish nationality.

      If this category applies, the residence strategy should be reviewed individually.

      Does Temporary Protection Count Toward Long-Term Residence?

      Some immigration statuses can have specific rules about how periods are counted.

      Do not assume that every type of stay, protection or authorization is treated in exactly the same way.

      Where special transitional legislation or instructions apply, the residence history should be checked using the rules relevant to that particular status.

      When Should You Apply for Long-Term Residence?

      Long-term residence eligibility and the filing window are two separate questions.

      First:

      Have you completed the required qualifying residence period?

      Second:

      When may the application be submitted?

      If you are already approaching the expiration of your current temporary residence permit, use the Spain Residence Permit Renewal Window Calculator to check your filing dates.

      A person who already satisfies the long-term residence conditions while holding a valid residence authorization may have different timing considerations from someone whose current permit is approaching expiry.

      Does Long-Term Residence Mean You No Longer Need a TIE?

      No.

      Long-term residence is the immigration authorization or status.

      The TIE is the physical identity card documenting the foreign resident’s status.

      After long-term residence is granted, the holder still receives a TIE and the physical card has its own renewal requirements.

      Read the TIE Card Spain guide for the difference between the residence authorization and the physical card.

      Is Long-Term Residence Permanent?

      Long-term residence provides indefinite residence and work rights, but that does not mean the status can never be lost.

      Separate rules regulate possible extinction and recovery of long-term residence.

      Extended periods outside the relevant territory or acquisition of another status can have consequences depending on the type of long-term residence.

      Therefore:

      indefinite residence does not mean “no rules forever.”

      Long-term residents should continue monitoring their status and TIE requirements.

      Long-Term Residence vs Spanish Citizenship

      Long-term residence and Spanish citizenship are completely different legal statuses.

      Long-Term Residence

      Generally gives indefinite residence and work rights while the person remains a foreign national.

      Spanish Citizenship

      Makes the applicant a Spanish national once citizenship has been legally acquired.

      The timing can also be very different.

      Some applicants may need:

      5 years for long-term residence

      but:

      10 years for citizenship.

      Others may potentially qualify for Spanish citizenship after only 2 years of qualifying residence because of their nationality of origin.

      That means some people could reach citizenship eligibility before the standard five-year long-term residence milestone.

      Use the Spanish Citizenship Eligibility & Timeline Calculator to compare your citizenship timeline.

      For the legal residence-period categories, also read Spanish Citizenship by Residence.

      Example: Five-Year National Long-Term Residence Timeline

      Assume:

      Qualifying legal residence begins:
      1 November 2023

      Required period:

      5 years

      Estimated five-year milestone:

      1 November 2028

      Reported longest absence:

      2 months

      Reported total absence:

      6 months

      If there are no other issues, the calculator may show:

      ON TRACK

      with the progress percentage and time remaining.

      Example: Five Years Already Completed

      Assume:

      Qualifying legal residence begins:
      1 June 2020

      Five-year milestone:

      1 June 2025

      If you run the calculator after that date and the other information entered does not create a warning, it can return:

      ELIGIBLE BY TIME

      This means the calculated residence period has been completed.

      It does not mean the immigration authority has already confirmed every requirement.

      Example: Absence Risk

      Assume an applicant reports:

      Longest single absence:
      7 months

      Even if the total absence is below 10 months, the reported single absence exceeds the ordinary six-month continuity threshold used by the calculator.

      The result may therefore show:

      ABSENCE RISK

      The applicant should review the travel history before relying on the five-year eligibility date.

      Why We Do Not Call the Result Simply “Eligible”

      Long-term residence involves more than a date.

      A person can complete five years and still have other factors requiring review.

      That is why Newcomer uses:

      ELIGIBLE BY TIME

      It means:

      The required residence-period milestone appears to have been reached based on the information entered.

      It does not mean:

      Your application is guaranteed to be approved.

      This distinction makes the calculator more useful and more reliable.

      Frequently Asked Questions

      How long do I need to live in Spain for permanent residence?

      For the standard long-term residence route, the central residence requirement is generally five years of legal and continuous residence.

      Is permanent residence the same as long-term residence in Spain?

      People often use “permanent residence” informally, but Spanish immigration legislation normally refers to residencia de larga duración.

      How many months can I be outside Spain during the five years?

      For the standard national route, the normal rule allows absences of up to six continuous months where total absences do not exceed ten months during the relevant five years.

      Qualifying work-related absences can have a higher cumulative limit.

      Can I be outside Spain for seven months once?

      A reported continuous absence longer than six months may create a continuity problem under the standard calculation, even where the overall cumulative absence remains below ten months.

      Can work travel count differently?

      Yes. Qualifying work-related absences can have a higher cumulative limit, although individual absences and the circumstances still matter.

      Do student years count?

      For EU Long-Term Residence, some qualifying study, pupil-mobility, volunteering or training periods may count at 50% when the applicable conditions are satisfied.

      Do not automatically apply that rule to National Long-Term Residence.

      Does padrón start my five years?

      Not automatically. The calculation concerns qualifying legal residence, not merely municipal registration.

      Does the date on my TIE start the five-year period?

      Not necessarily. The underlying authorization and legal residence history determine the relevant period.

      Do I need income for EU Long-Term Residence?

      EU Long-Term Residence includes an additional requirement for sufficient fixed and regular resources.

      Do I need health insurance for EU Long-Term Residence?

      The EU route includes a health-insurance requirement.

      What does ON TRACK mean?

      It means your current timeline appears to be progressing toward the five-year milestone without an obvious issue based on the information entered.

      What does ELIGIBLE BY TIME mean?

      It means the residence-period calculation appears complete. It does not guarantee approval of the complete application.

      What does ABSENCE RISK mean?

      It means the time outside Spain that you entered may affect the required continuity of residence.

      What does REVIEW REQUIRED mean?

      It means the calculator has identified a situation that should not be decided automatically, such as an uncertain residence start date, exceptional absence, study-credit issue or complex EU mobility history.

      What does POSSIBLE SPECIAL ROUTE mean?

      It means your answers suggest that one of the statutory National Long-Term Residence special categories may be relevant and should be reviewed separately from the standard five-year calculation.

      Plan Long-Term Residence Before the Fifth Year

      The best long-term residence strategy begins well before the five-year milestone.

      A good sequence is:

      Maintain legal residence → renew on time → record travel → monitor absences → check long-term residence progress → compare National and EU options → prepare the application → plan for citizenship if relevant.
