Spain Visa Eligibility Calculator

Spain Visa Eligibility

Which Spain residence route may fit you?

Answer a few questions about nationality, work, finances, study and family circumstances. Newcomer compares your answers with the currently published Rules and returns preliminary pathway matches.

1 Situation
2 Your plan
3 Requirements
4 Details
1

Your situation

Basic facts used to separate EU free-movement routes from third-country immigration routes.

2

What do you plan to do in Spain?

Choose the closest option. The calculator still evaluates alternative routes.

3

General requirements

Use “Not sure” when evidence or legal interpretation still needs checking.

4

Route details

Only questions relevant to your selected plan are shown.

No extra answers are required. The result will show which routes need more information.

This calculator performs a stateless screening. The calculator plugin does not create a user profile or store these answers.

Preliminary screening

Your Spain route matches

Routes are ranked from the answers you provided against the currently published Newcomer Rules.

Rule versions used

    Screening result only. A strong or possible match is not a visa or residence approval and does not replace individual legal review.

    How to Use the Spain Visa Eligibility Calculator

    The calculator is designed to make the first stage of Spanish immigration planning easier. You do not need to know which visa you want before starting.

    The questionnaire is divided into four simple stages.

    1. Tell Us About Your Situation

    Start with basic information about your circumstances:

    • your nationality group;
    • your age;
    • whether you are currently inside or outside Spain;
    • the number of family members accompanying you; and
    • how long you expect to stay in Spain.

    Nationality is particularly important. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens generally use a different residence framework from non-EU nationals, so the calculator separates these routes from the beginning.

    2. Tell Us What You Plan to Do in Spain

    Select the option that most closely describes your intended move:

    • live in Spain without working;
    • work remotely for foreign companies or clients;
    • work for a Spanish employer;
    • run a normal self-employed activity;
    • study in higher education;
    • join a family member in Spain;
    • launch an innovative entrepreneur project; or
    • choose I am not sure yet.

    If you do not yet know which route you want, choose I am not sure yet. The calculator can still show which options deserve further investigation.

    3. Answer the General Immigration Questions

    Several Spanish residence routes share basic requirements. The calculator therefore asks about areas such as:

    • healthcare or health-insurance coverage;
    • criminal-record requirements;
    • entry, public-order and admissibility requirements; and
    • financial resources.

    If you genuinely do not know an answer, select Not sure. It is better to receive a Needs review result than to create a misleading result by guessing.

    4. Complete the Questions for Your Selected Route

    The final section automatically changes according to what you plan to do in Spain.

    For example, someone choosing remote work may be asked about foreign-company history, the length of the professional relationship, qualifications, Spanish clients, income and Social Security compliance.

    A student will instead see questions about admission and studies, while someone joining family in Spain will see questions relating to the sponsor, relationship, housing and financial requirements.

    This keeps the questionnaire relevant instead of asking every user dozens of unnecessary questions.

    What Do the Results Mean?

    Strong match

    Your answers appear to satisfy the main conditions currently evaluated by the calculator for that route.

    A Strong match is a positive preliminary result, but it is not an official approval and does not guarantee that a visa or residence application will be accepted.

    Possible match

    Your circumstances may fit the route, but additional information, evidence or legal review may still be required.

    Needs review

    The calculator does not have enough confirmed information to classify the route confidently.

    Open Why this result? to see which requirements still need to be checked.

    Does not currently match

    One or more important conditions appear not to be satisfied based on the information entered.

    The detailed result identifies the condition that prevented a stronger match.

    Which Spain Visa and Residence Routes Does the Calculator Check?

    Digital Nomad / International Teleworker

    Spain’s international teleworker route, commonly known as the Digital Nomad Visa, is designed for qualifying non-EU nationals who perform remote professional activity mainly for companies or clients outside Spain.

    The screening can consider factors including remote-work arrangements, foreign-company activity history, the existing professional relationship, qualifications or experience, Spanish activity limits, financial resources and Social Security compliance.

    Read more in our Spain Digital Nomad Visa guide.

    Non-Lucrative Residence

    Non-Lucrative Residence can be relevant to financially independent non-EU nationals who want to live in Spain without carrying out employment or professional activity.

    Financial resources and suitable health coverage are among the important areas that need to be assessed.

    You can calculate the current household requirement with our Spain Non-Lucrative Visa Financial Requirements Calculator.

    Standard Employee Residence and Work

    Foreign nationals who have an employment opportunity with a Spanish employer may be able to use the standard employee residence-and-work pathway.

    The route can depend on factors including the employment contract, employer eligibility, professional qualifications and applicable employment-market conditions.

    See our EX-03 Residence and Work Permit guide for more information about the standard employee procedure.

    Highly Qualified Professional / EU Blue Card

    Highly skilled workers with qualifying employment in Spain may have access to specialised residence pathways such as the Highly Qualified Professional authorization or the EU Blue Card.

    These routes can involve specific conditions concerning the position, professional qualifications or experience and salary.

    Read our EU Blue Card Spain guide.

    Self-Employed Residence and Work

    This route may fit non-EU nationals who intend to establish a genuine independent professional or business activity in Spain.

    The assessment can involve the viability of the activity, licences or authorisations, planned investment and professional qualifications or experience.

    Read our Spain Self-Employed Visa — Cuenta Propia guide.

    Higher Education Student Authorization

    People coming to Spain primarily for qualifying higher education may need a Spanish study authorization rather than an ordinary residence-and-work permit.

    The route can depend on admission, programme duration, enrolment, financial resources, healthcare and other requirements.

    Read our Spain Student Visa guide.

    Family Reunification

    Family reunification can allow qualifying relatives to join an eligible family sponsor residing in Spain.

    The correct family procedure depends on the status of the sponsor, the family relationship and other conditions such as housing and financial resources.

    Read our Family Reunification in Spain guide.

    EU, EEA and Swiss Citizen Registration

    EU, EEA and Swiss citizens generally do not use the same immigration routes as third-country nationals.

    For longer residence in Spain, the relevant process may instead involve registration under the EU free-movement framework.

    The calculator recognises this distinction so an EU citizen is not incorrectly directed toward a visa intended for non-EU nationals.

    After arriving, our First Steps After Arriving in Spain guide can help you understand the main administrative steps.

    Entrepreneur Residence

    Spain also has a specialised residence pathway for qualifying innovative entrepreneurial projects.

    This is not the same as ordinary self-employment. A normal independent business may be better suited to the standard self-employed route, while a qualifying innovative project may need assessment under Spain’s entrepreneur framework.

    Can More Than One Spain Residence Route Match?

    Yes.

    Spanish immigration categories can overlap. Your circumstances may potentially fit more than one legal pathway.

    For example, someone with a highly qualified position in Spain may appear to satisfy both:

    • Highly Qualified Professional / EU Blue Card; and
    • Standard Employee Residence and Work.

    This does not mean the routes are identical. It means there may be more than one immigration strategy worth comparing.

    The better option can depend on issues such as qualifications, salary, employer circumstances, processing framework, family needs, mobility plans and long-term residence strategy.

    For this reason, the Newcomer calculator can show several matches instead of forcing every applicant into a single route.

    What Information Should You Have Before Starting?

    You will get a more useful result if you know approximately:

    • how long you intend to live in Spain;
    • whether you plan to work, study or live without working;
    • whether your employer or clients are inside or outside Spain;
    • how long you have worked with your current employer or clients;
    • your approximate income or available financial resources;
    • your professional qualifications and experience;
    • whether family members will accompany you;
    • whether you already have a family sponsor living in Spain;
    • your likely healthcare or insurance position; and
    • whether you expect to satisfy the applicable criminal-record and admissibility requirements.

    You do not need to upload documents simply to use the eligibility calculator.

    Does the Spain Visa Eligibility Calculator Store My Answers?

    No.

    The current calculator performs a stateless screening calculation.

    It does not create a Newcomer account and does not permanently store the questionnaire answers submitted through this calculator.

    Newcomer may later offer an optional account system allowing users who choose to do so to save calculator results, documents, deadlines and their personalised Spain plan.

    How Does Newcomer Keep the Calculator Updated?

    The Spain Visa Eligibility Calculator is connected to the Newcomer Rules Engine.

    Important immigration conditions and financial thresholds are maintained as versioned Rules rather than being permanently embedded throughout the calculator interface.

    When a relevant requirement changes, a new Rule version can be published with the appropriate effective date. Calculators using that Rule can then resolve the currently published version.

    This approach also preserves historical versions for traceability instead of silently replacing old information.

    Does the Calculator Cover Every Spanish Visa?

    No. Spain has many specialised immigration procedures.

    The calculator currently concentrates on several of the most important routes for people planning to move to Spain, including remote work, financially independent residence, employment, highly qualified employment, self-employment, higher education, family reunification, EU citizen registration and entrepreneurship.

    Other situations can involve:

    • family members of Spanish citizens;
    • non-EU family members of EU citizens;
    • researchers;
    • intra-company transfers;
    • arraigo;
    • exceptional circumstances;
    • humanitarian situations;
    • modification of an existing immigration status; and
    • other specialised authorizations.

    If the calculator returns No clear match yet, that does not necessarily mean you have no route to Spain.

    It means the information provided did not produce a sufficiently strong match among the pathways currently evaluated by the tool.

    For broader assistance, see our Immigration Services in Spain.

    What Should I Do After Getting My Result?

    Start by opening Why this result? under your strongest match.

    The calculator shows which conditions passed, which require review and which may prevent the route from matching your circumstances.

    Next, read the detailed Newcomer guide for that residence pathway before ordering documents or starting an application.

    This is important because immigration documents can involve:

    • criminal-record certificates;
    • birth and marriage certificates;
    • apostilles or legalisation;
    • sworn translations;
    • health-insurance certificates;
    • employment or professional evidence;
    • financial evidence; and
    • family documentation.

    Identifying the correct immigration route first can prevent unnecessary document costs and delays.

    Frequently Asked Questions About Spain Visa Eligibility

    Which Spain visa do I qualify for?

    The correct route depends on your nationality, work plans, income, professional background, studies, family situation and other circumstances. The calculator above can compare several major Spanish residence routes based on the information you provide.

    Is the Spain Visa Eligibility Calculator free?

    Yes. You can use the preliminary eligibility screening without creating a user account.

    Does a Strong match mean Spain will approve my visa?

    No. A Strong match means your answers appear consistent with the principal requirements evaluated by the calculator. Only the competent Spanish authorities can approve a visa or residence authorization.

    Can I qualify for more than one Spanish visa or residence permit?

    Yes. Some circumstances can potentially fit several pathways. The calculator can therefore display multiple strong or possible matches when appropriate.

    What if I do not know which visa I need?

    Select I am not sure yet. The calculator can identify routes that may deserve further investigation without requiring you to choose a visa first.

    Can EU citizens use this calculator?

    Yes. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens are screened separately so they can be directed toward the appropriate EU residence-registration framework rather than ordinary third-country visa routes.

    Does the calculator check Digital Nomad Visa income?

    Yes. The Digital Nomad screening can compare the income information entered with the current financial Rule used by the calculator, taking relevant family circumstances into account.

    For more detailed information about the route, see our Spain Digital Nomad Visa guide.

    Can I calculate the Non-Lucrative Visa financial requirement?

    Yes. The Visa Eligibility Calculator can screen the financial condition, while our dedicated Spain Non-Lucrative Visa Financial Requirements Calculator provides a specific household calculation.

    What happens when Spanish immigration rules change?

    Newcomer calculators are designed to use versioned Rules. When a relevant legal condition changes, the corresponding Rule can be updated through a new published version rather than requiring legal values to be rewritten manually throughout the calculator code.

    Does No clear match mean I cannot move to Spain?

    No. It only means that the information entered did not produce a sufficiently strong result among the routes currently evaluated by this calculator. Spain has additional immigration procedures that may require individual assessment.

    What should I do after choosing a visa route?

    Once you identify a likely route, review the detailed requirements, prepare the correct documents and plan the post-arrival steps.

    Our First Steps After Arriving in Spain guide can help with the next stage.

    Is the Spain Visa Eligibility Calculator legal advice?

    No. The calculator provides preliminary information and immigration-route screening. Complex cases, refusals, uncertain status, specialised family situations and unusual employment circumstances may require individual advice from a qualified professional.
